I've just installed R5A15 and setting the XvMC checkbox in:
TV settings > Playback
causes an error:
Unable to initialize video

I've got an Nvidia 5900XT and I used the nvidia-install script (the 7xxx one)

I can run it ok without, I just thought that XvMC would be helpful, does anyone know how to activate it?

Matt

I am using R5A15.1 and have experienced the exact same issue. I tried to use the script install-i686-lx.sh but this doesn't run properly.

I want to move some processing from the CPU to my VID card so getting this to work would be nice.

at this point It's not worth bothering with unless you have an epia board. XvMC is just not mature yet, and you will have lockups with it.

I can confirm the "unable to initialize video" error when trying to use XvMC (as it's apparently the only way for my frontend to even have a chance at playing back an HD recording).

Oh well, maybe one day.

well this is only speculation, but I would imagine that since the epia debs are gone that cesman just compiled the default debs with epia xvmc support instead of nvidia xvmc support, which actually makes sense because the nvidia xvmc is worthless if you really need it. I'm fairly certain that it wouldn't work for you on the frontend for hd playback anyways. As I did try xvmc with hd a while back on a machine that it was the only way to get hd playback and it froze everytime I tried to skip or do anything else that brought the osd up.

What I've see on the lists is that xvmc is still unstable, but that work on it has increased lately (seems to be the case with mythtv, ivtv and knoppmyth too). No promises, but my gut is telling me that xvmc might be useful in a month or two.

My perfectly stable EPIA MII based mythtv box went belly up recently (rule one: if it works, dont touch it :-). I decided to reinstall using Knoppmyth R5A15.1. All is well except xvmc is missing (the script install-i586-lx expects some debs that are missing.

I really need xvmc because the processor is low powered - I need hardare decoding of the MPEG2 streams.

You state that xvmc for nvidia is broken - I assume you are not including via's in there are you? They were rock solid for me, 2-10% CPU when playing DVDs.

Do you know where I can get the debs for xvmc to complete the install?

Many thanks.
Paul.

Didn't you read the text when it asked which package you want to install? The deb already have XvMC and XvMC-VLD builtin.

Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, they (XvMC & XvMC VLD) are installed.
But for some reason they dont seem to be working - the CPU load is too high.

I have enabled them in Myth -> setup -> setup -> tv settings -> playback.

The reason I know is that I had a stable working mythtv installation built on FC3 + VIA EPIA MII12000 for 5 months. It crashed when I installed some s/w that seems to have been incompatible with something. CPU load was down around 10% during playback.

I'm trying to use knoppmyth to speed up the reinstall.

Any thoughts on how I can tell whether they are working, outside of using CPU load?

Thanks.
Paul

You don't need to enable XvMC just XvMC-VLD. Take a look at the XF86 log in /var/log, it should state is XvMC is in use.
