Post subject:  Auto & Manual R4V2 installation fails

Thanks to KnoppMyth, my Myth box (R4) and its PVR 250 run great (though I can't see the "KnoppMyth" option on the main menu because I upgraded to .14 from R4?? Don't want to lose 200MB of shows). Really miss that option.

I made another system for front end use (works fine booting from CD, but I want TV out, etc, etc). AMD 1.4Ghz/256MB. But this is for the bedroom. So I'm using an old Quantum "Conner" hard drive (defect-free tested) that's 3.8GB in size. It's not good for much else, and it's VERY quiet.

My Problem: Using auto-install R4V2 is no good. The "automatic" four partitions are over 4gb and the install fails at HD3 (root is 2048mb, swap is 768mb, mythtv is 2048). Yes, the BIOS is set perfect. Auto or manual settings don't matter.

So I "zeroed" the drive (using conner utility) and tried manual install. Now when I go to partition, I get "Read Only error, no permission to write", I hit ENTER, then I see "can not get drive size, exiting". BTW, I got this error before I zeroed the drive, I just thought the zeros might help.

Now what??

I'm temped to use my old Xbox drive (8gb, loud), then "Partition Magic" everthing down to 3.8gb and then "Drive Image" it... any better ideas??

Thanks!

** EDIT - Ooops! There's already a thread going with this same issue. I'm not alone.

Same issue thread here:

Well the manual install also failed on the 8GB Xbox hard drive. But the auto install worked. 2048mb for root, 768mb for swap, 2100 or so for ring buffer, the rest for storage.

So I'm guessing you need at least an 8gb drive to install KnoppMyth (any version, unless there's a reason why manual install isn't working). But as a workaround for some people - just "Partition Magic" each partition (maybe not the swap) it down to your needs and DD (copy) the drive to a smaller one, if desired (for front-end use).
