Hey All, setting up my first mythtv box, super exited with it.

Anyway, I've been trying to configure and install my Nova-T 500 Dual PCI card. So I quit out of mythtv, right click on the desktop, apps > shell.

I need to run a few commands as root, for example apt-get so I put for example "sudo apt-get update" naturally it asks for my root password, and rejects it every single time. I can however press ctrl+alt+f1 and login as root and run the commands.

So why does the GUI shell when logged in as mythtv reject my root password? And on top of that, if I login as root and run a few commands to setup my tuner card, will it install files in a location that the mythtv login will not use making my commands redundant?

This is more than likely a super newbie question but it may help other newbie googlers out there.

Cheers,

If I recall correctly there is another password for sudo, but you could always su into root and run the commands....read the sig though :)

I believe sudo is asking for your password, not root's password. Never used sudo on Knoppmyth myself, just Ubuntu.

Your mythtv user doesn't have apt-get rights - Check your /etc/sudoers file to see what rights mythtv does have via sudo. You may be able to work around that with one of the many options to sudo...

Not that I am aware of. I have done most if not all of my setup as root.
