Post subject: | Upgrading from R5A30.2 to R5F1 |
I have a Knoppmyth R5A30.2 installation which has worked extremely well for two years now (with only minor glitches). The machine is in almost constant use and one of my criteria for upgrade is that this should continue with minimum downtime. I would like to undertake two upgrades: 1. Increase the disk size from 250GB (IDE) - 750GB (SATA) 2. Upgrade from R5A30.2 to R5F1. I have read the threads which advise that I should do this in 2 steps, i.e perform R5A30.2 - R5F1 upgrade first, but to do this (and keep the machine downtime to a minimum) I need to use the SATA disk. Unfortunately, although on R5A30.2, lilo can boot a SATA disk, the boot process fails with an error VFS kernel panic, with it not being able to find the root directory. I therefore plan to do a new install on the SATA drive with R5F1, but I would like to copy across only the tv recordings and database information for them. I am happy to manually re-configure everything else. Is this possible, or is there a better way to upgrade? Any help would be appreciated. Algenon. |

Don't miss the R5F1 Hints. They also contain a link to the info posting about the new backup and restore scripts. That thread contains a long discussion about doing things like this... |

I managed the upgrade. This is how I did it: 1. I read tjc's guide 2. backed-up and copied the video data on /myth to two IDE drives. 3. Installed R5F27 onto the SATA drive. 4. Copied /myth from the IDE drives to the SATA drive, adjusted /etc/fstab 5. Made the necessary system tweaks. 6. Enjoyed the new version My only problem is that I did not realise how noisy the Seagate ST3750640 SATA drive is and how much more disk access R5F27 seems to require. Its not too much of a problem until you simultaneously record and playback (then the head is thrashing about alot). I put the drive in a Smart Drive 2002C to try to quieten it down (and cool it down). Having read the forum and in particular http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=4220&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=dragon+hard+drive I am wondering if I should have gone for a Western Digital drive instead and before I change it out, does anyone else have a similar experience with Seagate drives and noise? Cecil generally requests that we stick to one topic per thread. The noise question belongs under hardware rather than installation. |
