Just wanted to verify the ramifications of tjc's statement from his R5.5 Tips/Tricks thread. I'll be coming up from R5F27 and am using an aged A7N8X-VM motherboard with on board video (GeForce 4 MX). I did a Code: $ nvidia-settings and am successfully using the old 1.0-8776 driver. As I recall, the newer ones don't work properly with OpenGL and also flicker something fierce.Anyway, I looked back at my R5F27 notes, and I had to reload the R5F1 drivers via the procedure on this wikipage. I'm nervously contemplating the upgrade and wanted to make sure I know what I'm in for... has this procedure been tested w/ R5.5? From my notes: Code: Restore video drivers from R5F1 since new drivers are messed-up with 440MX boards

I wrote that wiki page and I am about to do the upgrade to 5.5. I will post and update that page accordingly. |

R5.5 should automatically detect and install the correct driver for your MX4 (it does on my test box which is GeForce2 MX4). If you have problems with the one it picks you can always force the install of another version later using the directions in the R5.5 Hints. You should definitely try the recommended one first. Also note that Nvidia has changed their version numbering. The old 1.0.8776 would now be something like 87.76, but they also dropped a lot of versions from their archive so check their web site first. 1) Try the auto configured version 2) If there is a problem check the Nvidia website for an alternate version and the exact version number. 2) Use the install-nvidia-debian.sh script to download and install that version. |

Thanks for the reply, tjc. As I recall when I updated to R5F27, I tried using the nvidia-deb script with the --force switch, but it failed to install for some reason I didn't make note of back then. The only thing that worked for me was the directions I quoted above. |

The install-nvidia-debian.sh has been greatly improved in R5.5, and seems to "just plain work" very reliably. |

I agree fully with this statement. My biggest headache has always been with a couple of different NVidia cards. R5.5 worked out of the box in this respect. |
