I am attempting to upgrade from R5F1 to R5.5, I burned the CD, tested it, ran the auto install, configured my wireless after the reboot before entering my root password (as it does not find it for some reason), but each time I attempt to enter my root password it seems to lock the whole system up. I thought it was my old MX420 but I made sure it had the older driver and it did.

I am at a loss as to why it does this - it seems to have something to do with the X window, but I cannot figure it out and the logs do not seem to point anywhere.

Anyone had the X window lock up alot on this install?

Thanks!

Well, I was able to push through the install finally. I made the suggested changes in tjc's wonderful steps for the issues surrounding the nvidia cards and things got alot better. I am still getting major performance hits when shuffling through the menus and occasionally it will totally lock up my system.

I am not sure what to tweak - I guess all the new stuff is squeezing my MX420 out?

I rolled my nvidia driver back to the stock delivery one (96.43.05) to see if I did something unneeded. Now watching recordings results in 2 minutes of video, and then intermittent pink and green screens, with a splash of system lockups.

2/5 times it locks up and I reboot it locks up before the frontend can come up with the tux backsplash staring back at me.

In my Xorg.0.log I am seeing lots of this:

Code:

Have you tried disabiling OpenGL for rendering? (If it's enabled) I can't tell you exactly where it is as I'm not infront of a box ATM.

Hey Mike,

Yep. That was one of the first things I did but neglected to mention. No Dice.

Any other ideas? The wife is coming home and I wanted to slide this past as to not impact the WAF :)

Thanks.

I'd be tempted to run mythbackup and then do an auto upgrade to R5.5 (again).

You may want to try downgrading to the _really_ legacy driver - 71.86.04

Um, yeah - did it about 4 times - stupid thing locks up in the middle of it most the time. But, if I must I will :)

You can try tjc's suggestion above as well. You do not mention what your hardware is other than a MX420. And where is the install/upgrade "locking up". That info could be helpful.

Well, then I get the c7 respawning to fast error and have this in my Xorg.0.log

Code:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     that the NVIDIA device files have been created properly.
(EE) NVIDIA(0):     Please consult the NVIDIA README for details.
(EE) NVIDIA(0):  *** Aborting ***
(II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
(II) UnloadModule: "xaa"
(II) UnloadModule: "fb"
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Was working on updating the sig with it :)

It locked up as in Phase 2a where I was attempting to get my netgear wg311 working with ndiswrapper. tabbing around caused it to get locked up. Once I went with it and it still locked up prior to finishing the restore, it just garbled the whole screen it seemed and I could not find the errors anywhere else in the logs other than what I posted.

Hmmm.... That really should work. What does this show?
Code:
lspci -nm | grep 01:00.0

OBTW - The readme file it's talking about is: /usr/local/share/knoppmyth/nvidia/71.86.04/readme.txt
