After a fresh install to try out 5.5 I get this message on boot:

Mounting local filesystems...failed

After some experimentation I found commenting out the line to mount proc in /etc/fstab gets rid of the message. Howerver, regardless of whether I comment out that line or not, /proc exists and contains data and the system seems to run fine either way.

Can anybody explain this?

I get the same message on my box during boot up. It has not affected anything so I just accepted it as the normal boot up process.

It's trying to remount one of the virtual file systems that is already mounted. I forget which one. You can ignore it.
