Hmm...I tried posting the Xorg.0.log file and got just less than half of it posted. The file is 2400+ lines. Is there a message size limit?

Anyway, here's the xorg.conf file:

I scheduled a recording, which the box seems to have done. When I tried to watch it the screen went black and I couldn't get back to the menu. I wiped the drive and am trying the "upgrade" path from the last version (which worked except for the "prebuffering pause" crap) to the newest version. My attempt last night seemed to go well (I even got mystery voices coming out of my speakers at one point that said something like "database sync") but when it got to "updating database schema" it ran all night and still didn't complete. I've wiped (again) and started over (again)...

Have you read the R5.5 Hints? It covers these issues along with many others. Also see this thread on: Database Errors After Upgrade

There were a couple things that caused problems with the DB restore and waiting for the schema upgrade by the MythTV BE respectively.

Both are relatively easy to fix manually, and Human has just updated the live patcher with an automatic fix for the various causes of the first one.

The second one you can just ignore for now if the "Waiting for schema upgrade to complete..." takes more than 5-10 minutes. It's just not looking for the right log message.

Thanks, tjc, for the reply.

I went back, checked the hints, and found the references you made. Made the corrections, used the live patcher, got back into MythTV after the changes. I tried following the instructions as to when I should run the live patcher. When I did (after the setup part where I defined the network addressing, et cetera) I ended up in strange territory--after setting up my capture card, the program kept complaining that I didn't have any storage directories defined. When I then tried to watch live TV, I'd get dumped right back to the menu. A check of the logs showed that, indeed, no directories had been created/assigned so there was no place to store the live buffer. I got a bit confused at that point, and looking at the MythTV site's instructions didn't help much. (It talked about the importance of creating the directories, but didn't go into details on how. I knew they should be created on hda3 for my system, but had problems making the logical leap on how to create a directory on hda3 specifically.) So I had apparently dumped out of Knoppmyth's setup unintenionally and some things didn't run to completion. I just wiped the drive and started with a fresh auto install from scratch. I'm back where I started.

I did figure out a couple of things to try. I kept getting messages in the frontend log (I believe) when it tried to change mode from "none" to "watch TV" because the ACPI daemon wasn't loaded. I followed instructions to load it; now that error's gone away. I also had tried force-installing a couple of older versions of the nVidia drivers with no luck.

So, is there some magic to posting a 2500+ line code file? I'd like to try re-posting the Xorg.0.log for wiser folks than I to examine but can't seem to do the whole thing.

Okay, figured out how to create two directories and assign them to hda3. The concept certainly is different than in the DOS/Windows world--everything's virtual. But I had two directories for recordings--one for LiveTV and one just for recordings--on the partition with all the room, and I assigned them to the appropriate storage groups. Then I tried watching LiveTV from the menu, but would get dumped immediately back to the menu again. The log files didn't show anything particularly informative.

Since I'd been mucking around quite a bit with settings I wiped the HD and started from scratch (fifth, sixth time? I've lost count...) but the power and internet connection went out not long after I got to mythtv-setup. Now I have power again but the internet may be down for another couple of days, so I'm stuck waiting. Man, Hurricane Ike really tore things up for a lot of people--even those of us up in Ohio!

Pastebin.com, zip it up and post it on your homepage. Surely you ISP gives you some storage for a home page...

I'd never heard of pastebin.com, and just visited them...how cool is that? I had no idea a service like that existed. I'll post that file, with a link here, when I get home tonight. As for a personal homepage...yeah, I believe RoadRunner allows me some space but I've never bothered setting it up. I just started two blogs within the past month, though...I was the only geek I knew without a web presence.

Could someone please look at these files and LMK if anything's obviously wrong that I can correct? It would be greatly appreciated.

For heaven's sake--let's not have everyone jump in at once! :)

I am probably the last guy you want looking over your xorg files, but there really doesn't seem to be anything wrong with them (there is only one error (EE) message -- something about a font path). The links that tjc/jzigmyth provided to the "hints" and wiki pages should give you alot of information. Otherwise, you may just need to explain the problem again with some more details.

Thanks for the reply. I'd already gone through the hints and troubleshooting as suggested with no joy. I guess it's a good thing I'm not depending on the box to record right now...except that I'm missing a few shows I really wanted to see in HD this fall.

Well, it's literally been months since I posted this problem. Followed the suggested FAQs as well as the few suggestions made to assist in troubleshooting. I've been derailed due to an operation and subsequent recovery period so I haven't looked at it lately, but I'm pretty disappointed.

The program would at least work in the last version, albeit with jerkiness and picture aberrations when an overlay was done or channels changed. My hardware didn't change--something had to change in the new Xorg. However, despite posting my config files, nobody's been able to offer a solution.

For me, KnoppMyth is just Not Ready For Prime Time, and fails it's goal of making an easily-installed PVR for the masses. I'm going to have to shelve it until the next release and maybe I'll try it again then.
