Hi there,

I have a full R5.E50 system with one backend in my basement and 5 frontends around my house....and I can tell you that I run them for almoust 2 years without problems....
KM for me is the best friend...THANKS GUYS FOR YOUR WORK.....

Now is time for me to look for a upgrade....I was thinking to do first a upgrade for a frontend from R5.E50 to R5.5.....and surprise...when the new frontend connect to the R5.E50 backend tells me "Unexpected DB Schema version"....so the MYSQL schema chenged?...

I was thinking to slowly migrate my frontends and then migrate the backend...but with this problem I need first to migrate the backend...seems like a suicide action especially that my wife and kids love the system....he,he....
So.....can someone give me a plan?....a ideea?...how to do it?

Due to MythTV's protocol version, you cannot have a version X backend and version Y frontend. All system just speak the same version. This isn't a KnoppMyth restriction but a MythTV requirement.

Please read tjc's upgrade guides. We do all we can to ensure a smooth upgrade. Unfortunately due to software beyond our control (ivtv for instance) you may have to manaully adjust a few things after the upgrade. Again, read the guides. Hope you'll stick with us for another 2 years. :)

Thanks....I will start to read out the guides....Im preparing now another backend to install in the place of the actual one...is almost impossible to upgrade without having backuo hardware...I'm in Thailand now so I think I will go back home with some spare motherboards in my luggage..:)
So I will start to do a plan...otherwise my family will kill me...if I stoppoing the "show" for one week...he,he....
And be sure I will stick with Knoppmyth....i like it a lot...I know linux but I'm not a guru....but all the time I succeed to do something in my system...

..and by the way...this forum si the best place...
thanks...and keep you updated with my upgrade

Plan:
1. Buy new larger HD for backend.
2. Do a backup (from the Knoppmyth Menu) on old HD.
3. Swap large HD for old backend HD keeping old HD for easy reversion.
4. Install R5.5 onto new HD.
5. Confirm that everything critical works on your fresh install.
6. Create diskless frontend installs for each of your frontends and confirm that they work booting from the network.
7. Plug in old HD and copy entire contents of /myth to /myth on the new HD
8. Unplug old HD keeping it for easy reversion.
9. Auto Upgrade new HD and it will import the old database so that all you old shows/videos/recording rules are available.
10. Recreate diskless frontends on the upgraded backend.

If all is good when you let the family loose on it:
11. reformat the old HD.
12. add old HD as /myth2 and add it to the default storage group.
13. remove HDs from frontends to save power and reduce noise.
14. profit.
