I was going to test an R6 frontend in a VM, and just wanted to ensure that if I attempt to connect it to an R5.5 backend it won't wreck anything?

Don't remember. Kind of depends on whether there are any schema changes between the two versions, but I don't remember what's in R6 versus R5.5.

On the the other hand, even if there aren't supposed to be, do a standard backup before you start! That way if things go all pear shaped you'll have a simple recovery path.

This should be reflexive. If you're going to do an experiment on the system, make a backup first. If you're going to do manual maintenance, make a backup first. If you're going to leave the system running unattended for a couple weeks while you're on vacation, make a backup first. Backups are purposely as easy as falling off a log. With a good backup you can proceed more or less fearlessly.

Yikes, I read "falling off a log" three times before I realized you meant a "tree log", not a log file!

...I've been in IT too long.
