Hey all,

Is there a way to blow away knoppix, and myth, and re-install all the workings but leave all the media files? I just copied all my photo's and mp3s over, and hate to blow them away to try and do a clean install of all the software for R5A15

thanks in advance,

joelb

PS obviously, without resorting to a completely manual install, which is still beyond my capabilities...

Again thanks to MythTV and KnoppMyth for such a cool product! (Toy)

I don't know about knoppix and myth, but this can be done with KnoppMyth. Perhaps a search of the forum? Or maybe reading the phamplet?

Well, I'm picky about the name of my product as well as my own name. Don't frelling figure all this does is water me off. Again, have you read the phamplet?

Ok,

Yes. I did read the doc. I assume you're referring to
Quote:
You should now see six option. Choose 4. Load config. You should now see /KNOPPIX/knoppmyth. Press <ENTER>. If you have an SATA drive, change this to /KNOPPIX/knoppmyth-sata and press <ENTER>. Next, choose 1. Configure Installation. Provided the requested information. Don't create a user called "mythtv", this user has already been created with a password of "mythtv". Once back to the main menu, select 2. Start installation. Verify the information and sit back. Once complete, reboot the system. After the system reboots it will start X and KnoppMyth will open an Xterm and ask for the root password. See post installation.

It wasn't immediately apparent to me that this was how to accomplish what I'm trying to do. I'm still not sure. I assume I reboot, see the 6 options and start from choose 4 and go from there....

To be fair to myself, I test software for a living, so I'm not instructions dumb, but I'm still only a little more than a newbie to linux.

As long as the media you want to preserve is in the /myth directory (or in /home/mythtv), you are looking for the "auto-upgrade" option in the installation pamphlet.

http://mysettopbox.tv/doc.html#autoupgrade

Back up your KnoppMyth system first (via MythTV main menu, select the KnoppMyth button, then pick "backup KnoppMyth"), then restart with the CD and pick the Auto Upgrade option. Then follow the pamphlet's Post-Installation instructions and let the config scripts continue to run. They'll eventually restore the MySQL database as well as your /home/mythtv folder. The media in /myth was actually left alone as that partition doesn't get touched.

Note that anything you adjusted in XF86Config-4, or anything you installed yourself with apt-get, WILL get wiped out. You just have to reinstall all that stuff. :( I usually copy XF86Config-4 and a couple other config files (smb.conf, fstab) to my /home/mythtv folder so they get backed up and restored.

Yes, we initial backed up all of /etc, but there were issue with that. You can either copy what you want to backup to /home/mythtv or /myth/backup where is won't get touched.

Just wanted to verify that this would still be the case if /myth was a LVM array? Currently running R4V5 thinking of moving to R5V15 but would hate to lose the 430+ Gig on the 500G LVM array because of no place to move it.

with an lvm array it's not automatic. there is a wiki article on how to upgrade with a lvm array.

The LVM upgrade article is here:

http://knoppmythwiki.homelinux.org/inde ... adeWithLVM

A few updates for A15 should be made there... I didn't have to "umount /dev/hda4", you don't have to do the "modprobe" or "echo" steps mentioned for R5 users. Everything else works great.
