Ok sorry if this is a stupid question but here goes.

When you drop to a root console ( i thinks its called that anyway) by pressing <ctrl><alt><f1> you have to type your logon (root) and then pwd. but is there anyway to get back to the gmd so that you can left click and start up myth again. at the moment i have to reboot every time.

I know that you can do most stuff in xterm and putty from the windows boxen but for some reason i can not get putty to connect to the myth boxen.

hee is the second question.

i have tried everything i can think of and i have google from here to everywhere and they all same the same thing
go to the hosts.allow file and add a line ssh:allow.
if that still does not work go to teh hosts deny file and remove the paraniod and replace it will all

so i did this and i aslo tried to following
sshd:all
ssh:all
sshd:allow
ssh:allow
all:192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0

and more

now i have done this before with the last box i build and it worked fine ( the hardware was not enoght p3-450) so i borrowed my games machine for awhile (p3-1gig,512meg,80gig)

but try asi might i still carnt get putty to connect.
the networkcard is alive as i can apt-get and i can ping the card from the windows box but when i try to get putty to connect it fails with no messages.

thanks in advance

chris

From the console login, use <alt><f7> to get back into X

Is sshd running? Try:

ps -ef | grep ssh

You should see /usr/sbin/sshd .. Can you connect to MythWeb (ala http://your_mythtv_box_ip_here/) from the windows machine?

I've found the easiest way concidering you are beind a firewall etc, and yes I know this makes everything less secure blah blah blah.

Is to edit hosts.deny and put a # at the begining of the line that has paranoid in it. That comments it out so that nothing gets denied.

Thank you both for taking the time reply.

I did check the sshd, and it was running. I saw it in the startup out put but i thought i would check it anyway.

I know that what xsecrets said is bad mobo, because of security and like he said i am behind a firewall, so i tried it. and it worked. This is all very strange. it was the only thing that worked. again not good security but in this case it was that or nothing

Thanks again
chris

Just so you know what that line you commented out does.
That is a reverse lookup. Basically it says deny any traffic from anyone who is not who they say they are. so It will try to do a reverse lookup on the machine connecting to it. Well unless you are running your own dns with reverse lookup zones it's not going to be able to reverse lookup your other machines behind your firewall.

And I know that may not be exactly right but it is the jist, but if anyone can explain it even better feel free.

Thanks for that, i was wondering actualy.

I know that this is not a forum for firwalling but in the end if you are running a mythbox, then you are most likly running some form of a network network. weather its like me with two servers, two seperate networks (one orange and one green) hidden behind a smothwall firewall and a dialup modem. (need broadband put the money is not there at the moment). Or you are just running internet connection sharing then a firwall is a great idea. It does lessen (NOTICE Some NOT all) the need for security on the inside of your network.

Providing the firwall you are running is setup properly then there is less need for the average person to get paraniod about the security on the inside of there network.
one very good thing i was told from a security specialst was link between your firwall box and your server was to make it IPX/SPX protocol instead of TCP. although this does slow the connection down a little (not realy that noticable nowdays) it provides the best anti-intrusion as the change from one protocol to another makes it very very hard to get into.

THis is a simple idea that is running in most big end places as another form of security. (so that easy to do, but not that hard to do either)

SO if anyone out there is wanting a bit more security then there you go.

also there is some links to server products and firwalls.

http://www.e-smith.org FREE
http://www.smoothwall.com (i think, it also free, mostly)
http://clarkconnect.com

not sure about the lastone search for clarkconnect and you will get it. All are linux based and are very good and stable. I have had the e-smith running on a p200mmx for about 2 years and the uptime is inexecces of 2-3months (between blackouts)

Flame away if you like
:D
