I just got my PVR250 card the other day, and I installed it to my myth box. When I try to watch tv i get a black screen. If I cat /dev/video > foo.mpeg i can view the mpeg with mplayer fine. Following other posts I tried to run xawtv. It was complaining about input: "television" being an invaluid input command, so I edited the config to point input to Tuner 0. But it still seems to being trying to use /dev/dsp. Not sure if that would affect video or not. Scott |

If you soundcard isn't being recognized, myth will not work. What kind of soundcard do you have? |

Its the junk card that came with my HP Pavillion 8570C . It says its an "Audio Riser Card". So not having my audio card configured will prevent video from being displayed? |

To be clear, you may be able to use stock video players to play video without a problem if you do not have an audio card configured, but not through MythTV. MythTV attempts to set the volume as you have configured it before it actually launches the video player. If that function errors out, for example being unable to access /dev/dsp as your messages indicate, it will not attempt to launch any video player. CNR based audio interfaces are currently very unlikely to work in Linux. If you have a PCI slot available, or less likely an ISA slot, you should attempt to find an audio card you can use in one of those slots. A SoundBlaster 16 on a PCI slot is available at CompUSA, and MicroCenter for around $20-$30. You may be able to get some of the house brand audio cards at either location for $12-$15, and most of them work acceptably for the audio you are likely to capture off the air, or through Cable. You may find alternatives you prefer online for less. If you are going to use this to play AAC files into a high end audio system, it might pay to go for one of the SB Audiology systems, but I would leave that to your discretion. -Rusty |

Thanks for the details rusty! I plan on building a new machine for mythtv, but I have been playing around with it on an old P3-450 I had laying around. I found it odd that no sound prevented video from playing, but it makes sense now. I'll just have to move to my new hardware before I can play anymore. Thanks |
