Whenever I select either "Play DVD" or "MPEG4 CD" the only result is that I see the little button depressing animation. Nothing else happens. I can however "mount /dvd" and see the avi file on the cd. Does anyone have any advice or know what it going wrong? Also, I left the DVD settings like media playing appplication and dvd device location to their defaults.

I decided to try and see if MythVideo would work.
So, I put in a cd containing a backup of a DVD ( Punch-Drunk Love ) I made. I mounted it, and copied the avi to the /myth/video/ directory.
When I tried to play it under "Browse Videos" the screen briefly went gray and a message came up saying something about starting the video, but it quickly went away and left me back at the menu.
"Video Manager" was able to see the video and even grabbed data on it from imdb (very spiffy considering I didn't tag the avi so it worked from filename alone).
Next I umounted the dvd (my only optical drive) and removed the dvd. Upon going back to the "Browse Videos" option, I get the same results as before, but this time with database info on screen.
The "Video List" similarly shows data on the movie, but selecting the movie from this menu does nothing (not even the quick flash that I get from the "Browse Videos" list).
I'm really at a loss as to what is going on now, can anyone help?

Incidentaly, what, aside from menu interface, is the difference between "Browse Videos" and "Video List"?

/dev/dev/ and /dev/cdrom is hat the system is setup to look for DVDs and CDs. These are symlinked to /dev/hdc.

On my system, they were simlinked to /dev/scd0 though I do not have any SCSI on this computer. But nonetheless, I have tried changing in the dvd menu to point to /dev/hdc directly, also I have tried /dev/hdd (though my drive is secondary master), /dev/scd0, and I even tried changing /dev/dvd and /dev/cdrom to symlink to /dev/hdc. All have had the same results.

I am having the exact same problem. I can import a cd with music on it but I can not play a dvd from the dvd menu. I press the play button but nothing happens. I am trying to play the Matrix via a dvd that I bought (not ripped).

I have ensured that dma was enabled for the dvd drive via the
hdparm -d /dev/hdc
command and I have verified that hdc is the dvd drive.

Thanks

-Brian

bmb you cannot play encrypted dvd's which the matrix is out of the box. The MPAA won't let us do that here in the US. So just search around a bit.

I did some more experimentation.

I changed my DVD player commnad to "mplayer dvd:// -fs -zoom". It does not work, but this exact same command starts a dvd if I enter it from one of the xterms.

So I tried to enter the default Video playback command given by KnoppMyth as, "mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv %s". Now if I replace the %s with a path to a video file and type that into an xterm, it plays.

Why would it be that from within MythTV they don't play, but from xterm they do?
