Hey all,

Hardware specifics: P2-450, gateway 440BX chipset motherboard w/ onboard everything (you know how gateway does it). 512 meg EDO ram.

I'd like to use this PC as a frontend for myth. I attempted to do the Frontend install w/ my R4 CD. I made it to the point in the setup when the software attempts to use the eth0 with a DHCP broadcast. After about 30 seconds, it reports: fail, hit return to reboot. I also did the install with the standard options, booted to X, logged in as root and did a netcardconfig. I got the same error as I did witht he frontend install.

Checked in the BIOS and the on board network is indeed enabled. Also, I know the on board NIC works because I previously had RH7 on there and it found it just fine. Any ideas to get this to work?

It's kindof a long shot, but you could go into the bios and see if there is a way to disable apic someother people have reported this helping.

Thanks for the suggestion XS, I did try that, but doesn't matter if apic is on or off. If I totally disable the network card, the netcardconf reports no ethernet devices at all. I know it's seeing the damn thing, I just can't make it use it -- even manually assigning it IP/DNS/etc doesn't work.

Is there any built in util that can help me with this?

If you know the chipset you can modprobe the module. Then ifconfig eth0 up && pump.

You can turn ACPI off in Linux. Simply append your startup tag with:

Code:
acpi=off

If that doesn't work, what does

Code:
dmesg | grep eth?

show you?[/code]

well actually in R4V4.x APIC, LAPIC and ACPI are not even compiled into or as modules in the kernel. So any switches associated with them will do nothing.
