I still burn my DVDs with an XP machine, and I (for instance) just copied over a 3.8GB recording via Samba, with no apparent problems.

How odd. There are tons of messages on myth-user which begin "my movie stops playing after xxx time" and the answer is always, "oh, you shared your backend files using Samba which has a 2G limit per file, use NFS instead." I've read the question and answer so many times I never questioned it or tried it myself, since I have only one combined FE/BE system.

actually I think the issue is with smbfs, which lots of people use to create mountpoints using the smb protocol. smbfs has the 2G limit (as well as a security issue that was just released), the fix is to move to cifs which does not have either problem.
