I have a 7NIF2 running R5A12 with a PVR250. I'm pretty happy with the quality of DVD's made from recorded broadcast. However, the playback quality of the 7NIF2 connected to my TV (via onboard SVideo to aregular analog TV)is not so great with the NVIDIA drivers which come with R5A12.

So far, I have tweaked the flicker control, texture detail andcolors in nvidia-settings. This has helped quite a bit and I not longer have the initial faded picture. However, I still have choppy motion and the picture seems a soft.

What would be the best way to improve my picture quality? I don't really want to invest in a PVR-350 just for the better playback. Is there anything else that I can do to match what I with my cable box connected directly to my TV? Other settings to change? Another (cheap) video card that I should try? Different drivers?

Note that some of the nvidia settings for reducing flicker will possibly result in blurring your image.

thanks - I'll try that out. What is the optimal setting for flicker in nvidia-settings? Should I not use nvidia settings at all?

I haven't played with it much, but I believe that some people are using the flicker filter in nvidia-settings to blur out their interlacing artifacts. Bob's a better solution for that, so you might try turning the flicker filter off and see what you think.

wow if people are using flicker to blur out interlacing artifacts they are having a completely different experience than I did. I couldn't really even tell that flicker did much at all, but I never really had a big flicker problem. As for the best setting it's just a slide bar and it takes effect immediately, so you just play with it and see.

You may want to readjust your nvidia-settings stuff but I wouldn't turn off the flicker control conpletely. Just the static desktop will flicker with no motion involved. Someone either here, on the wiki, or over in the MythTV Users mailing list had a pretty good walk through on how to tune your TV output using nvidia-settings. I highly recommend taking the time to search for it since following the directions made my display look noticably better.
