After editing XF86Config-4 thus I no longer got the warnings though the final command

# fbset -fb -left 36 -right -16 -upper 100 -lower 30 -hslen 42

didn't work

Needless to say still not a sausage out of the screen. MythTV works fine out of the monitor but no TV pic . When I do ctrl-alt-backspace to restart x it goes to a blue swirly pattern screen and just sits there mythtv no longer seems to run, unless the machine is totally rebooted

So has anyone figured out what's wrong with that last fbset (except for the extra '-' in front of the 16?

I'm getting the error in XF86Config.0.log that there's no /dev/fb0 - /dev/fb7 devices. I think that may still be part of my problem in getting things to work. I spent 6 hours yesterday working on this, so any help or input would be appreciated.

I managed to make it work with the current R5B7. Silks script didn't work for me but the setting stuff was helpfull. I took also information from here:

To get rid of vesafb it was enough to quote vga=788 in /etc/lilo.conf and run 'lilo'. No kernel recompiling!

For loading the kernel modules simply put



into /etc/modules. Thats always a good way to load modules on Debian systems.

The XF86Config-4 settings should be taken from Silk at the beginning of the howto.

I chose a different way for the rest as well. Silk had a problem with fbset for the right adjustment. Something like



didn't work in his script. If I noticed the right way, it only works properly if you run it after X has started. You have to find a way to run a script as root after X. A standard way with knoppmyth is to create an executable script /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default. If you don't use gdm, there will surely be other ways to manage, but I don't know of one.

My /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default (PAL) looks like that:



Thats it. You should definetly download the program maven-prog as mentioned by someone else. Untar it, cd into the directory, run 'make' and copy 'matrox' to /usr/local/bin.

Just some tips for the right adjustment of the screen. Don't create /etc/gdm/PostLogin/Default before having the right settings.

- Run X
- Login via ssh from another computer in sight of the TV if possible.
- Run all comands from the script as root apart from the last fbset. The 'matrox' commands aren't needed as well.
- Start fbset with one parameter like -left (negative values seem to work as well if needed). If it fits add another one until you have the right settings. There can be corruptions with some settings. Best you read the The Matrox Millenium G400 TV/OUT Mini-HOWTO (not available at the moment). It has a good section about adjustment with fbset.

If you don't have remote access to the computer, I'm not sure which is the best way. It might be a good way to open a xterm and do the settings. In case of a corruption kill X with alt+crtl+backspace and try it again. You can also try to switch to a console, but they might suffer from corruption as well. Reminder: Switching to a Console removes the adjustment settings.


The result is really great. The picture fits the whole screen and the quality of the picture is really good. The letters from the top menus flicker a bit and the lines inside setting menus quite strong, but that doesn't matter to much since I want to watch films not menus.

There is still one problem left. Watching films with mplayer or xine is fine. Watching TV with xine is fine, but watching TV inside mythtv the picture is vertically compressed and just a part is shown. Switching between modes with 'w', I couldn't find one without the vertical compression and none that fits with 4:3 the screen. Doing changes within the settings didn't help as well.

I'd be grateful if someone could help me with that problem. This is my first running System and I have no experience with older versions, but could it have something to do with the new 0.19 version? I think I have to start a thread about that problem.

Apart from that I can really recommend the G400DH.
