I've copied some avi files to my mythtv box and I''m trying to play them through mythtv. I've updated mplayer to use divx and xvid codecs. The videos show up in mythtv, but the length shows 0 minutes, and when i try to play them, nothing happens. the files are fine, and i can play them on windows from my mythtv box. The user rating also has weird numbers like -4.47069e-08. Any idea what's going on?

C'mon, nobody? Can anybody at least tell me they've heard of this problem before? or offer an educated guess?

can't really help you too much with that info. have you tried looking at your player setting from the video settings then taking that and running it from an xterm to see what kind of output/errors you get?

Hi averyml,
You may use a browser to edit those bits of invalid / off the wall video labels. Look for the edit on right side in browser when looking at videos. I don't know how to play avi files.

What codec are your avi's using?

This is a good guide on updating Mplayer with a bunch more codecs.

http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... ht=mplayer

Also installing MythStream guide on WIKI will update the codecs as well (wiki down at the moment)

What is the size of your AVI file? I have had issues with files over 2GB and not playing prior to upgrading Mplayer and codecs it uses.

I'm not positive which codecs they require (i don't know how to check...), but I'm pretty sure at least some of them are divx or xvid. I already followed the directions in that thread to update the codecs, and it still didn't work. The files are only about 300-400mb each, for the most part...I did find out that by changing the player from mplayer to the internal player, it suddenly worked. What would I be losing if I just stuck with the internal player?

hmm...found one problem so far...my tv is a regular square (3:4?) aspect ratio, but my video fies are widescreen (16:9?)...I tried looking for a way to change the aspect ratio, but I'm not sure that's the problem...i don't think it's stretching it, i think it's just cutting off parts of it...hmm..

mplayer apparently doesn't work because it doesn't like my video card. the internal player doesn't display right, and xine will play with the right aspect ration, but it's so jerky it comes up with a dropped frames message box. any suggestions on what i should do?

What Video card are you using? And what Video card driver is it using?

Video card driver info can be found in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file. Search for "driver" sounds like you are using "vesa" driver which will cause those issues.

Code:
pico /etc/X11/XF86Config-4

ctrl+w to search for "driver" (will be multiple driver lines look for I think screen section)

There is a utility for Windows called "gspot" that anlayazes vids and tells info about the file. Don't know the site to get from, is included with K-Lite codec pack.

Thank you for your patience. The driver is in fact vesa. The graphics card is a radeon a9250. The codec is in fact xvid.

No problem, I went though the same stuff in the begining and almost went back to using GeeXboX. (Glad I didn't) :D

I'll throw same suggestion that I used on another post of person seeing same problems.

You may want to search around the forums for ATI help, I have seen a lot of ATI driver posts and seem to be diffrences in ATI chipsets. I had an ATI card way back but traded it for an nvidia card as my ATI card had driver issues too. You are more likley to find the driver setup info you need in an existing topic or posting a new topic that ATI owners may see and answer rather than burying it in this thread. My last easy suggestion is to replace "vesa" with "radeon" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4, but that may cause TV-out to stop working.

Other person with same issues started a new topic.

Here is a post dealing with ATI driver issues and howto install.

Good Luck

I guess I forgot to mention that my ati graphics card is an ati chipset but not actually manufactured my ati (i think that's the right terminology?), and from what i've read in some of those posts, the ati drivers only work wtih those graphics cards actually manufactured by ati.
