I tried to find this (or a topic similar) but was not having any luck. So, I thought I'd post my idea. I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this however ...

So I've heard that in the land of TiVO, it will actually suggest shows to watch based on what you record. Could this be made available for MythTV as well?

Maybe a set of plugins that poll all of your recording schedules and logs them to a remote database. Then searches can be performed for other users who record the same shows and can build suggestions based on different shows they record that are similar.

Example. If I'm recording The Simpsons, Myth Busters and Family guy, all of that would be logged to a remote db. Then, John Doe connects with The Simpsons, Family Guy and Aqua Teen. When there's a search performed for users who record The Simpsons, it would fine John Doe. Then it would search for users who record Family Guy, and again would fine John Doe. Now it is able to detect some similarities in our recording schedules. It would detected that I dont record Aqua teen and would suggest it to me. At the same time, it shouldn't suggest Myth Busters based on the above criteria because of the genre differences.

The queries would of course have to be more complex than that, and no personal identifiable information be sent/stored either.

I personally think this would be one enhancement that most users would fine to be beneficial. I know that my wife and I are constantly wishing to have something new to watch, and then we spend time searching through the program guide to hopefully stumble upon something that sounds interesting. This would help keep users media libraries filled with not only their content, but new content based on what other users are recording with similar tastes.

Thoughts? Flames?
Just my $0.02 on an enhancement

You'll see in that thread mention of something called MythRecommend... it was a command-line thing that got written a long time ago. I remember trying it and being unimpressed.

Haven't tried TVWish yet--looks interesting.

But ultimately the problem will be that TiVo has a MUCH larger database of viewer interests and can thus generate arguably better recommendations. The number of people running MythTV, multiplied by the percentage of those users using TVWish, is probably a pretty small number.

I do agree that the user base would be low. Wouldn't that mean however that the shows that are suggested would come from a fairly close nit community with similar interests?

If something like this could be bundled as a part of KnoppMyth (or MythTV its self) that would help increase the userbase, making this a more widely used option.
