Turns out the latest 2.0 version of the client from nomachine is not compatible with the version of freenx. You need to obtain the older 1.5 version of the client. For more info see my follow up post below.

Hey folks, anyone else have trouble getting the NX client to connect to your KnoppMyth box?

I followed the nxhowto wiki:

Running R5D1, firewall off on XP Pro laptop, (never fear, my cable modem was disconnected)

I installed the nxclient on my xp laptop with the following setup:



and when I run it, it displays the following messages:



Not critical since putty works just fine but it would be handy to get this working.

With some google-ing found the following:

which explains that the 2.0 version of the client on nomachine.com's site will not work with the latest version of freenx (on KnoppMyth).

Fortunately the above gentoo wiki has a pointer to the 1.5 version:

Also this following post mentions that 2x.com also has a freenx (they simply call it linux nx) compatible client that is available for free (didn't try it since it is both a client and a server?) should the 1.5 version ever completely disappear:
