nuvexport does not work in R5D1 either. It throws a division
by zero exception. There were nice additions to R5D1 and
some good bug fixes but some basic functionality was broken
so it's a really mixed bag. I also notice a lot of database corruption
issues that I didn't get with the previous version.

After having written the script I note
the person who laid out the database schema was definitely
not very experienced using databases. The use of tables with
multiple columns for keys makes life much more difficult and
potentially introduces errors since it uses timestamps for
a unique key.

My final goal was anything VLC would play. It would be nice to be
able to cut the commericals too.

For editing video without any fancy transitions -- just trimming stuff at the beginning or end, and removing segments in the middle (e.g. commercials), I HIGHLY recommend VideoRedo (www.videoredo.com). It is a light-weight FRAME-ACCURATE video editor that re-renders only the required frames around a cut-point, making very smooth cuts (both video and audio) possible. A demo version is available, and it costs US$49.99 for the full version. Unfortunately, it is windoze only (doesn't work with Wine or CrossOver). I use VideoRedo (running under VMware) via Samba to edit MythTV PVRx50 recordings.

Sidenote: all 3 of the computers in my household run Linux -- VideoReDo and QuickTax are the ONLY two applications that I have installed in my VMware XP virtual machine on my desktop computer -- which indicates how much I like / rely upon this program.

BTW, if you mentioned which capture card you are using, I missed it. But if you are using an ivtv based card, you might want to experiment with the dnr_temporal parameter. It may help de-noise the signal from your VCR output. Example:
Code:
ivtvctl --device=/dev/video0 -c dnr_temporal=8 --set-ctrl=contrast=74

Note that there have been many changes as the ivtv driver is being merged into the kernel, so the above syntax may not be correct for your version (may use a "v4l" based command instead of "ivtvctl").

Thanks for the info! I'll check into the ivtv parameter and see if it
helps. I'm using hauppage tuners with knoppmyth R5D1. I believe
it's debian but I'm unsure what revision etc.

When I do my next revision up of motherboard I'll be trying the
virtual machine running windoze too. They're putting kvm in the
kernel and it'll probably be ready about the time I'm ready to
spend the money on a dual core machine.

Video redo sounds like exactly what I was looking for. Nobody seems
to make any freeware editors that don't just cut at the nearest I frame.

Happy new year
