Lossless commercial cutting? Works great in R5E50. I recorded a marathon of stuff to test some things, marked the commercials, and transcoded it all without any problems.

Is there a master how/to on how to mark, remove, and transcode? Does this work for SDTV as well as HDTV. Am I mixing auto-commercial removal which I heard works only with HDTV if you want 100%

Commercial marking is a nontrivial exercise. There are lots of heuristics, but no perfect formula. This applies fro both SDTV and HDTV as far as I'm aware. At least in SDTV there is no flag on the relevant frames that says "Hey, I'm part of a commercial! :D". At best you're going to get it about 90-95% right. Enter cut-list editing, where you the frearless user, refines the softwares best guess.

Start here - http://YOUR.HOSTNAME.OR.IP.HERE/mythtv-doc/keys.txt for the keybindings.

What I generally do is start watching the program, hit 'M' for menu, hit 'Enter' to edit the recording, hit 'Z' to load the cut list, and start refining. PgDn and PgUp step you forward and backward through existing cut points. 'Enter' will bring up the action menu ('Esc' will get you out with no action) where you can select what to do. 'Up' and 'Down' arrows let you select how much the 'Right' and 'Left' arrows move you. The rest should be clear with some experimentation.

I read this complete post and something is still not clear to me. I have Knoppmyth R5D1 with mythtv 0.19. I record in mpeg2 with a PVR-500 and when I set the autotranscode option for my recordings, it is not working, the job is never run. But I can start all the transcodes manually and it works very well. Is there a solution to make the autotranscode work ?

I believe that only lossless mpeg2 transcoding (what you would use to cut commercials) didn't work in R5D1. The MPEG4 transcoding did work, I believe.

I didn't see reports of any fixes for lossless mpeg2 transcoding in R5D1. I believe that all development on R5D1 is over, so it will never be fixed for that release.

In practicle terms, if you want lossless mpeg2 transcoding, you will need to back up to R5C7 or upgrade to R5E50.

Eric

MPEG4 encoding didn't work in R5D1 unless you did the .20 upgrade.

Thank you this is exactly what I wanted to know. Maybe just a little note, the trancoding to mpeg4 works well if started manually. It is only the auto-trancode that doesn't work because the job never starts.

When you say manually, what do you mean? From the command line? Transcoding didn't work at all for me, manual or no.

By manually I mean I had to go into the recorded shows list in the MythFrontend and select transcode for the recording. This way the transcode job was starting and it was working correctly.

That's what I thought. That didn't work for me either 'til I went to 0.20.
