When my machine is commercial flagging, the HD playback stutters due to CPU usage. Is there a way to tell myth not to commercial flag if one of the cards is being used for either live tv or recording?

I don't think so but it'll be interesting to know if this is indeed possible.

The problem isn't that you are recording while com-flagging. It is that you are playing back HD during comm-flagging. Playback is the big CPU-killer in HDTV. If you switch to using XvMC or a faster processor to lessen the load during playback, you'll see fewer problems playing back while flagging.

It might be worth looking into one of the newer nVidia cards and the latest release of KnoppMyth. I understand people are getting much better usage of their CPUs while using the "sync to vblank" option on the nVidia driver. I think this requires recompile of the driver, but that isn't as hard as it sounds.

I run two comm-flagging jobs simultaneously with my three HD recorder cards. My only problems come from trying to play back a show in HD while everything is running. I'll probably update my box soon to the new distro and get a new nVidia card to see if it helps. (Having more than 1G of memory also helps in this situation.)

Thanks ... good to know that my recordings won't have stutters - that was my primary concern. If I notice playback issues, I can probably figure out a way to stop the commercial flagging - or just watch a non-hd show until it is done. I can probably do some further performance tweaking too.

thanks!

In general setup, there are options to limit the time when jobs (and commercial flagging) are permitted to occur. Since most of my tv watching is in the evening, I just set the jobs to run from midnight to 4:30pm ... This should take care of it I think.

Did you try renicing the commflag process? This ussually fixes the problem and allows you to keep flagging all day.

Thornsoft wrote a script to do this automatically, works great.

Here is the thread dicussing that sollution.
