I was using my pvr-350 tv output, but switched to a fx5200 tv out to avoid the common downfalls of the 350.
The picture quality on the 350 was 100x better than that of the fx5200.
I looked into nvidia-settings but I'm pretty lost in there. I guess I was hoping for a big focus dial or something, but no such luck.
I am running svideo output to a JVC 27" flat tube tv.
Any advice would be much appreciated!

Search for a posting by me that mentions nvidia-settings and gamma. Don't forget to click the "serach for all terms" checkbox. Also see the PictureQuality page on the wiki.

I've searched around, the settings you've been talking about are mostly color related. my concern is with the crispness of text. even in the console it's a bit blurry
I'll keep poking through settings, I suppose
thanks!

I had blurry video from my FX5500 until I purchased a higher quality cable (from www.cablestogo.com, IIRC). I was surprised by this as the old cable was working OK when attached to the PVR-350. Possibly a difference in the outputs, but I changed a number of things at the time so I never pinned it down.

This is because the flicker filter works by bluring the interlaced lines vertically to minimise the change in the line from one interlaced field to the next. Doing this can noticably reduce flicker for sharp horizontal lines (like those that appear in the menus) at the expense of vertical resolution. For normal video, flicker is usually not an issue, so having the flicker filter as low as you can stand in the menus should improve playback quality.
There is also an old thread that a lot of that information came from which was all about cleaning up the the display of text especially for things like bottom of the screen "crawls" as seen on CNN and HNN among others. Using the tuning hints on the wiki page mine are crisp, sharp and very readable.

thanks guys, I'll give that stuff a try. I can tell you right now though, the s-video cable I'm using is as old as the hills, and is of poor quality to begin with!
I'll report back!
