Well this little problem has been bugging me for a while. Happens a couple times a week and the fix is to restart lirc and it is all good. The device name isn't changing.. so I got no idea! Was happening in R5D1 and now still happening, less frequently in R5E50.
It's the usb receiver that comes with the Dvico MCE Fusion Remote.

Well to this date I haven't managed to find out why it is happening, maybe it's a specific problem with usb on my mobo (haven't got any usb cards to test this) or a configuration issue.
I bought an infrared transceiver kit today from Dick Smith, so hopefully that might help to get around the problem.

Hi,
Is the DSE kit serial or USB? I've found that Linux has some trouble dealing with USB stuff. I got rid of my Dvico Dual card when the second (USB) tuner kept silently failing during a recording (grr!), and prior to that, my Twinhan receiver (USB keyboard receiver) started causing all inputs to freeze up (only when KM moved to xorg from xfree86).
I'm interested in how you go with this.
Mike

The kit is serial, I figured I'd take the KISS (keep it simple stupid) theory and apply it here and work out from there. If it happens with serial I will have to look harder at LIRC. But it was basically just dropping the link to the USB device for no apparent reason. Restarting LIRC and then the front end solves the issue, but after the 8th time yesterday I was starting to get annoyed!

There's a linux serial remote howto, and lists the chipsets and devices that work with Linux. I've bought loads of Technisat TV cards with remotes and had to just chuck the serial receivers and remotes away. The dongle's chipset is just not supported by Linux. Very frustrating and wasteful (particularly as I had to spend $thousands extra buying StreamZaps for my media boxes).
Since you spent a month waiting for a reply to your original post, can I assume you did the research already?
Mike

Well the problem was happening a couple of times a week, so it wasn't high on the priority list, but since it has gotten worse I've decided I should look further into it.
I bought the kit from DSE for $15, so I haven't really spent much time researching, apart from a few links on forums stating that it has been used successfully with Linux and LIRC. If it doesn't work, $15 doesn't hurt the pocket all that much!
I just remembered that I have another serial infrared adapter somewhere in my bag of tricks, but not even sure if it works or if it is compatible or even what type it is
EDIT: The device is designed for plugging into the IrDA port that is on a lot of motherboards. But from what I've seen it *can* be converted to serial, now I have to research how

Hmm information on converting this little dohicky to serial is a little harder to find, but none the less I'm pretty sure it's possible. Worst case I'll have a use for the parts anyway.
Found this website, looks interesting.
http://www.veg.nildram.co.uk/remote.htm
I may just dig out the IR receiver I've got in my bag of tricks and give that a whirl.

Have a look at http://tldp.org/HOWTO/Infrared-HOWTO/.
Also, http://www.manoweb.com/alesan/lirc/cocoon/ looks interesting. I was tempted to do this myself, but my KnoppMyth box doesn't have a serial port. You may well have all the parts needed to build one of these.
Tell me how you go. It's useful to know if someone else does this stuff successfully.
Mike

So far so... well not so good. Need to brush on my Serial skills, as far as it goes my experience with Linux Serial is Nil. Bit tired tonight, so the brain probably isn't absorbing the information I need to know.
So far I think I need to rebuild LIRC with serial modules loaded, but I think I can change the config file of LIRC to point to a different device. Going through the different things but I'm a tad lost!
setserial /dev/ttyS0 uart none gives me ->
Cannot set serial info: Device or resource busy
Found information regarding it, but I think I need to get more of an understanding of serial before I can work it out! To much information and not enough brain power/time to process it all tonight!
For now I'll plug the USB Receiver back in and leave it at that.

Well this might go on the back burner till I sort out the new problem.
All was working well till the remote started acting up now:
LiveTV unwatchable, although recordings aren't bad, little jittery (even ones just recorded and old ones)
None of my AVI's are playing (running off a smb share using autofs, hasn't been a problem till now)
DVD Playback is fine
Watched CPU usage during live tv and it was sitting at a healthy 16% and have tried the different MPEG encoders and de-interlacing with no real change. I'm bloody confused! I frigged around with LIRC a bit, but apart from that no changes have been made!!

Well now that I can actually watch TV again. I can have another crack at this soon.
The side effect of having the issue with X was that I figured out why my serial port was taken... Bloody X wanting it for a mouse!
So now I can do the set serial etc, so I should be able to try out a few of these different IR devices. Need to find if I have a voltage regulator or go buy one. But for now need to go work on the car for a bit!
