Hi all,

I'm not sure if we have a bug in the works here but over the last week I've been noticing my front-end (R5E50) had been running a bit sluggish. Last night the front-end failed to connect to the master back-end. I rebooted the front-end and received the message box:

Code:
Xsession warning: unable to write to /tmp. X session may exit with an error

From previous experience on R5C7, I first thought that I had a huge log file that filled /. I checked my / partition and found it to be 100% full. I checked my logs just in case I had a rollover problem but they were in check.

Upon closer examination, I found that /home/mythtv/.xsession-errors had grown into a monster. I researched the forums for a bit and came to the conclusion that the file could just be deleted.

After that was completed, I did a restart on both the front and back-ends and I was back up and running.

Misc info and questions:

I had found another posting here relating to my problem but the source of it was not the same seeing that the solution that worked for him did not work for me. See: http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... +write+tmp

I did not include the specs on my machines seeing that I found a solution but can provide that info if it deems necessary.

These 2 computers have had an uptime of around 90 days without reboot.

I record a lot of programs a week (8+ to the back-end only) and delete about 90% of them.

The master back-end is the primary location of all my media.

The front-end is ONLY used for connecting the the back-end. I currently do not use it for any other purposes (ripping music, movies, etc.)

Is deleting the file the solution or is there a "rollover" problem with .xsession-errors which needs to be addressed?

I hope this helps the community out in case others are have similar issues and can help in trouble shooting why this happened in the first place.

If any of you need any more information from me I would be happy to help.

Thanks,

Malcolm

I would say it is a bug when a log file crashes a system, but the work-around is easy.
