If I put in a media CD's (e.g. containing video files only) the automount feature loads up mythgallery by default, pretty annoying.

I cannot disable automount otherwise I'd have to restart every time i insert a new media CD.

how to fix?

Under R5D1, Utilities/setup->setup->Images Settings there is a text box you can fill in labeled "Pathes to import images from". By default it includes /mnt/cdrom. My guess is that if you edit out the reference to /mnt/cdrom your problem will go away.

Or, if you can live without Myth jumping to the DVD screen when you put a DVD in, go into page 5 of the general settings and turn off "Monitor CD/DVD drives".

Out of curiosity, could you list the files on the CD?
(e.g. ls -R /cdrom)

thanks for the suggestions...

I could remove the reference to /mnt/cdrom as suggested but that is working around a problem rather than solving the issue, the kickside of doing that would be that I couldn't import jpegs from CD to mythgallery if i wanted to.

When I say I can't disable automount... what I actually meant was I cannot disable:

"Monitor CD/DVD drives".

If I disable that option then no disc will automount and so I have to start pratting around with my keyboard to access a media CD.

I'll post the ls contents of a CD later on....

Personally, I think going to MythGallery makes sense. It will display any images on the disc and it will also launch a media player to play movies on the disc. Which media player can be set in the configuration, the default is MPlayer.

However one place where it is a large nuisance is when I am in the throes of setting up a complex MythArchive session with multiple video files, editted descriptors, new encoding settings, but then I forgot to put the DVD-RW into the computer first, and it reads the previously burnt information and mythfrontend goes to MythGallery, hence losing all the hard work I just set up in MythArchive.

I haven't used recent MythArchives, but wouldn't this only be a problem if someone puts a disk in while you are configuring your new disk in MythArchive and before you press the Finish or Burn button?

Anyway, you could report this as a bug against MythArchive. It is fixable by disabling the MythMediaMonitor while the user is configuring the new disk.

If I try and play a video file from mythgallery nothing happens, I've checked the settings and it is indeed on Mplayer. Anyway, on principal, I don't want to play videos on MythGallery.

If I put in a CD/DVD containing mostly videos I want Mythvideo, mostly pics = Mythgallery, mostly music = Mythmusic. If a disc is entered with lots of pics and lots of videos it should just prompt "Play Videos, View Pictures, Cancel". Simple logic.

I'm having the same problem. In older versions of KM i could pop in a disk that had some Xvid tv shows or movies i had downloaded and i could play them under "Optical disk" "play Mpeg4".
Now when i put in the disk it goes to the Photo gallery, and i don't really mind it doing that but about 80% of the disks i put in will show the list of files but won't play. I choose the file i want to play on the disk and the screen just goes to the blue background of the theme. It doesn't lock up because it allows me to hit back and take me back into that menu.
I've even tried going into the settings and changing the player to VLC and it just does the same thing. i don't really care about it going straight to Gallery when i load the disk, i would just like for it to be able to play those files.
any suggestions?

OK. I created a test disk, and on insertion (or mythfrontend startup) it comes up in the browser view in MythGallery. Press Enter (select) and it starts playing in mplayer. That was in SVN version of MythTV, but I can't see any real diffs. Here is relevant output log:

Why? Just because of the name? What if MythGallery was renamed MythMediaViewer?

The menus jump straight into the button for the AVI file. If it wasn't for the "SlideShow,Random,Meta Data..." buttons down the side, you wouldn't even know you were in MythGallery.

I spent a few hours investigating how to add "play a video from this device" support to MythVideo. The biggest problem is the lack of a device (mounted filesystem) browser to it.

Maybe, but what if the user wants to play both at that point? (i.e. view/play each file in sequence) What plugin would you suggest should be used then? And why?

You could disable the "Monitor CD/DVD drives" setting, and add an extra button in the menus that does something like:
Code:
<EXEC>pmount /dev/cdrom cdrom; mplayer /media/cdrom/*</EXEC>
