If it is the daily mythfilldatabase can I set that to a specific time like 4am. When I do the hdparm /dev/sda1 I get

/dev/sda1:
HDIO_GET_MULTCOUNT failed: Invalid argument
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
geometry = 4182/255/63, sectors = 5000937984, start = 63
root@mythserver01:~#

I don't see anything that says using_dma flag.

If I stream a DVD from my BE to my diskless FE wa is from 1.5 to about 7.

Yeah, of course. It's under utilities/setup -> setup -> general -> 7th screen

You can pick a fixed time, a time range, an update frequency, and/or allow zap2it to suggest a next update time to spread their load. Before the "suggested time" option I used to schedule my updates randomly during the day while I was at work or commuting within a range from ~9AM to ~7PM.

I found the spot you are talking about. I will give that a try.

Thanks again.

Problem is that 'dev/sda1' is a SCSI drive. 'hdparm' is mostly for IDE drives:
Quote:
man hdparm | grep -in -C 1 scsi
298- -v Display all settings, except -i (same as -acdgkmnru for IDE, -gr
299: for SCSI or -adgr for XT). This is also the default behaviour
300- when no flags are specified.
--
438-
439: Some options (eg. -r for SCSI) may not work with old kernels as neces-
440- sary ioctl()'s were not supported.
--
443- disk devices, several of the options are also valid (and permitted) for
444: use with SCSI hard disk devices and MFM/RLL hard disks with XT inter-
445- faces.

As far as I know, SCSCI DMA is usually always on. For tweaking SCSI drives, low level hardware utils exist in such Debian packages as sdparm, blktool, and sg3-utils. All of 'em have their own syntax, but I'm not a SCSI expert and don't which one is best for checking DMA-ish stuff.

I think I have it figured it. It was the the mythfilldatabase programing running. I have it limited to 3 to 4 in the morning and things seem to be ok now.

Thank for all the help.
