Post subject:  no dns... after short move...

This may or may not be a KnoppMyth problem... I'll let public opinion drive that.

I moved across the street and down a 1/3rd mile. My isp (cox) told me I'd need a new static ip, since I'm going to be on a differnt node. Ok no problem. I have my mythbox behind a linksys wirless router which worked just fine at the old place. I configured KnoppMyth to be 192.168.1.100, and forwarded ports 22, and 80, for ssh and webserver to knoppmyth. so to my mind changing the static IP in the router shouldn't affect the myth box. It did somehow. After changing the router settings, I can't get connections outside [I can't resolve names]. if I ping my mail server back in KS. by ip addr. (Im on a contract in DC area) no problem. If I try to ping my mail server by NAME no luck at all. now, when I use my laptop to connect to the wireless router it handles me no problems. I can resolve names, so can my roommates' laptops. But myth will not get or display tv listings, weather, news, etc.

I've tried netcardconfigure, no luck... any ideas out there....

thanks in advance,

joelb

check that the nameserver listed in /etc/resolv.conf is correct.

see what dns servers your laptop is configured to use and put them
in your /etc/resolv.conf

or use cox's

nameserver 24.248.74.20
nameserver 24.248.72.20

Its not. You told it (or your DHCP server) the name servers to use when you installed it.

My /etc/resolv.conf seems to an alias (simlink?) and I can't open it with winscp and I can't less, more, or vi it from an ssh session...

The /etc/resolv.conf.chw has:

"# Insert nameservers here
# nameserver 127.0.0.1
nameserver 66.59.235.1"

in it. not sure if this is significant....

You should definitely be able to vi it within ssh even if it is a symlink... If you can't that's probably your problem.

if you do ls -al /etc/resolv.conf it should tell you where it is linked to. You could then see if that file exists and is correct.

Absolute friggin voodoo man...

I woke up this am. and the guide info is back, but now if I try to get into news it dumps me out to the myth desktop. Ouch!

Still no weather data either.... I don't know if my problem is partially fixed, or if I can simply see the program data which was downloaded before the problems....

AARRGGGHHH....

will post more later... thanks again in advance...

/etc/resolv.conf may be a symlink, but it definitely should be editable with vi or nano from a root (su will work) console/ssh session.

Hi,

You may need to have your router re-obtain the dns servers from the modem. I have my KM dns point to the router and let the router do something.

Besure to have good / real good passwords on your accounts as there are "people" that have nothing better to do than hammer on your machine all day. Just check the logs for the several thousand attemps to login on port 22.

Mike
