I am wanting to play some videos that are in the real media forma (rmbv) and I am having some problems. A quick google seems to suggest xine and mplayer will play them but my current R5B7 doesn't.

As far as I can tell it is just a case of an unrecognised format.

Do upgrade mplayer as in this thread (albeit a little outdated)

Instead will upgrading to R5C7 see this issue resolved?

Yep, you need the real codecs package. I haven't gone to R5C7 yet but nothing in the changelog suggests any changes. However I have recomplied mplayer with more codecs as part of the mythstream installation, so I suggest you try following that thread first (make sure you get all the relevant codec packages). mplayer is the default video player, haven't really tried xine but it seems mostly to be used for DVD playback.
