Post subject:  /myth/backup safe for non-myth backups?
Hello, I've got a lot of room in /myth and it would be very convenient to backup other computers in my home to /myth/backup.
Are files safe there? Will some script delete files there that weren't created by myth?

The backup and restore scripts don't fiddle with anything there other than the files they create and the list files they read, however, since the backups share space in the /myth partition with the media library it's probably not advisable.

Hi,

My 2 pennies worth, I have everything except the kitchen sink stored in /myth. Just be advised that the file structure is for large files (mpg's) so if you stuff a lot of little files in it, you may run out of inodes well before running out of space.

What works good is to install an A series (needs a cache partition) and then upgrade to B, C or D series and the use the cache partition for the odd storage space :) Upgrade only re-does the / partition.

Or also, you could hang a usb drive on your machine. After you have backed up, turn it off for safe keeping.

Ok, I confess I'm confused by the "install an A series ..." part. Does that mean install an additional hard drive or partitiion?

No, he's talking about installing obsolete versions. I think the USB or Firewire drive suggestion was probably the better one.

The inodes issue is the big reason. We've had a number of people run into problems when they had lots of relatively small files (games, music).

Hi,

Sorry, the A series refers to the R5 Axx up to and including A30.2. Those recorded using the .nuv extension however was really an .mpg file. B7 switched to .mpg and in so doing also did away with the /cache partition so when folks upgrade they were left with a "spare" storage area :) I also found that if you set the cache size to minimum and then pointed to the /myth/tv folder that would free up the cache partition.

You could jump through some hoops and redo the partitioning so that you could set up a storage space.

Depending on what you want to store, how many "little" files that is, you could make a directory in /myth and put stuff there. It would be safe from upgrades. I have added a directory to mine called tools ( /myth/tools ) that currently has 34 gig of "stuff" out of an 80 gig partition and still have inodes left because many of the files are knoppmyth iso files. ie, one quite large file.

All depends on how you want to store stuff. A simple entry in the fstab should allow you to add an external usb drive that you could lock up in a safe.
