Best way to move files off of Myth

I'm a newbie.. wondering what the best way to get mpg files off of myth is. Any suggestions?

Hi,
Are you referring to tv recordings that are stored in /myth/tv? If so, what I do is list the /myth/pretty using ls -al . This gives me both the real name and the link to the real file. Then I copy
cp </myth/tv/link-to-real-name> /myth/video<real -name>
then I
cp </myth/tv/link-to-real-name.png> /myth/video/.covers/<real -name.png>

If you had an external usb drive you put them there instead of /myth/video so yes, you can copy / move them from the myth.

How about TO Myth ? (Say I want to copy a mpg2 to the Living Room machine to play it there. Will copying it to /myth/tv/ confuse the database that otherwisae didn't know it was there ?)
I usually copy a file to another computer, then play it with Xine.
[I don't stream video 'cuz my network causes hitching, and don't use a master backend, to spread the recordings over several hard drives]

Hi,

Most likely, if you can think of it, it has already been done multiple ways :) Your KnoppMyth machine is a really a debian based os under the hood so you can do almost anything your hardware permits.

Going back to your question, if you have a mpg recording(s), place it in the /myth/video folder then if you have a picture to associate with it put into the /myth/video/.covers When you do the next step, you can marry an image to your mpg(s)

Once the mpg file is transferred, go to utilites and select Video Manager to rescan the folder and update the entries. Placing a recording to the tv folder just clutters it up as that is maintained in a different fashion.

If going from a windows machine, samba will help. Just have to start it up. Check the wiki as I am pretty sure there is an entry for that step. Oh, you may want to install on your windows vlc (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/) It is free and is my preferred chioce because it works.

Looks like just using an ssh connect to server... option in file browser from my ubuntu box worked the best. I just copy the files across using my network ;) This probably would be the best way to move videos over too, i'm sure you'll have to check directory rights to write them to the /myth/video folder.

Thanks for the info gents, I like to consult with wiser heads as to the feasibility of an action before I do it.
I knew there were pitfalls with messing with files without having Myth do it, I hadn't considered plunking them in the video folder. :D

i use samba to connect to my windows machine. the myth box comes up in the network neighborhood with two shared folders. one of the folders (forget which one) has a folder for 'video.' you can just drop video files in the folder over the lan. once the files are there, simply go to setup-video and it will scan the folder and add them to your media library. as long as youhave the codecs installed in mplayer, they'll play. this is how i watch my hd torrents i download... heh heh.
