Post subject:  How to get anamorphic or 16:9 on DVD playback for 4:3 TV?

My Toshiba 4:3 TV has an anamorphic squeeze feature, so when watching enhanced DVDs I get a better picture. To get this to work I set the DVD player to 16:9 TV aspect ratio and for every enhanced DVD, flip the TV size to 16:9 with the remote. 4:3 or non-enhanced DVDs look just fine with the TV set to 4:3.

How do I accomplish this in Myth when playing a DVD? I don't have a 16:9 TV so don't want to change any of the TV functions, just want anamorphic DVDs to play as if the TV were 16:9.

R5D1 is using xine as the default DVD player, would the -anamorphic flag do what I want, or do I need to pass some type of 16:9 TV indication to xine? I'd like this to work just like my DVD player so 4:3, non-enhanced 16:9, and anamorphic DVDs just do the right thing.

Post subject:  Xine anamorphic on 4:3 TV settings

To answer my own question...

Set the aspect ratio to -r 4:3 in Xine! Setting -r anamorphic or -r 16:9 did not have the proper affect. I don't know why this works, but if I set this aspect ratio then the image is too tall, changing the squeeze on the TV (to 16:9) results in the correct ratios using the enhanced resolution of anamorphic DVDs.

Once I got this working it became very apparent that the PVR-150 recordings have a very soft focus, I can't use the same TV display settings (color, brightness, etc) for DVDs as recorded programs. DVDs are over saturated and too contrasty with the settings to make PVR-150 recordings look half decent (they never look sharp enough for me).

Anyway I'm happy I can retire the DVD player and use MythTV with anamorphic disks.
