I just installed RD51 (fresh install, not an upgrade). Everything seems to be working (wireless card, scheduling, recording, watching tv, etc.). However, every once in a while the screen just goes blank when I hit "watch tv." I wait for what seems like more than enough time (30 seconds?). Then I reboot and everything seems to work again. It doesn't happen all the time. Most of the time I notice it after watching a recording and then going to tv. Or, if I am watching tv, stop, and then go back to tv relatively quickly.

I suppose the first place to look is in one of the log files as pointed out on the wiki (CheckingLogFiles), but which one and what am I looking for? Should I keep it running and check remotely from another computer? restart?

I did a search on this forum and the wiki and couldn't find anything. If I just missed it, what would be the key words to bring up some relevant information?

if if matters:
hauppauge 250
nvidia 5200 pci card

Hi,

I would try booting the install cd and at the prompt do the memtest and let it run over night. F1 or F2 should give you the correct syntax.

Thank, Mike.

I ran the memtest and it came up clean (ok).

I also did a little more investigation. I had putty going from another computer and when the mythbox locked up so did putty. So, it seems like a lockup/crash issue. Pressing the restart button has been the only way out.

I have noticed that it only happens right after you press "watch tv" or right after you press to watch a recording (never in the middle of watching anything). Otherwise everything ok.

I don't think that it ever happens first. That is, after a reboot it always works the first time you press "watch tv" or watch a recording.

Any more ideas how I might trouble shoot this???

Hi,

Since the memory seems to test ok, then the list becomes more elusive. hard drive dma, irq conflict, flakey video card, or even a corrupt install.

There is on the install a testcd mode which will go through and check the integraty of the iso files. May be worth the time. If that checks ok, it still could have erronously read the cd during install.

You could do a backup and save off any special tweaks that you have done then do an upgrade/manual install to reinstall it maybe from a fresh burn. There is a md check also that you may want to run on the iso.

I believe tjc has some troubleshooting tips on the Xsecrets wiki also but not sure if he covers something of this nature.

The logs are located in /var/log . You need to be root to access them even to read.

I would also try all the other features of KM to ensure they are working. Maybe rip a cd or two and then let them play for a few hours with the eye candy running. Some exercise the cpu a little. Make recordings then try watching a recording, try watching a recording while it is recording, push the buttons and see if other things cause your lockup.

If the putty connection was also locked up, that is usually a fairly serious indicator that things aren't well at a lower level in the system. That would of course affect KM also as it needs the rock it stands on to be stable.

That is about all I can offer for ideas, maybe with a few more clues from dmesg or the logs may help others to offer more suggestions.

Mike

Yikes. That does not sound too good.

I will try all of your suggestions (might take me a while because most of my time is not my own anymore (those meddling kids)).

I did watch the pats game all day yesterday. I started watching it shortly after it started recording and I kept pausing and coming back -- all without problems (it took me until after dinner to finish watching it). So that seems like a pretty good work out.

Haven't tried to rip any cds, but I did stream video to another location a few times without problem. I did a mythburn and it worked.

only time it locks is switching from recordto tv or tv to record.

Most of the computer is new.

amd dual core 3800
gigabyte board
pny video nvidia 5200
new power supply
old hd (but only a year and a half)

I did a couple of installs before I thought I had everything working, so I should be able to reinstall again without too much problem since I did it so recently.

The other thing is that I seem to recall that on previous installs it locked up for the same reasons. So, hopefully, just a bad burn.

Totally appreciate your help.

Some more information (still crashing):

I checked the MD5sum of the downloaded .iso (ok)
I couldn't find any testcd mode on the install disk (I looked under F2 and F3, is there somewhere else?)
I switched out video cards (no change)
I switched pci slots (no change)

Here is the /var/log/mythtv/mythbackend.log from startup to "watch tv" and back until it crashes. As you can see, I can switch back and forth only a few times before crash.

It only crashes when calling for tv or calling for a recorded propram. Never in the middle of playback or anywhere else.

Hi,

Just enter at boot: testcd and that should do it.

Just how big is the new (year & half) drive?

what does $ df -h return?

Did you double check all settings in setup and utilities / setup for proper paths?

Mike

I tried testcd at the boot: for the install disk. I couldn't get it to work.

Here is what I got after trying testcd, test-cd, test cd, Testcd, TESTCD (one at at time of course.

It looked like this, for example

boot: testcd

could not find kernel image: testcd

My hard drive is 200 gig (seagate or western digital; not a sata drive; uses the IDE connection)

here is df -h:

Code:
root@mythtv:/home/mythtv# df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1             4.7G  2.0G  2.5G  45% /
/dev/hda3             184G   24G  161G  13% /myth

I have double checked the setup and utilities, but I am not exactly an expert. It all looks right to me. I haven't tweaked much out of the box.

ok. I got "tv testcd" to work at boot. Why "tv testcd" and not "testcd" I don't know. Everything checked out ok.

In the process, though, I noticed that I had the dvd/cd player on the "slave" setting on one ide cable and the hard drive on the "slave setting" on the other ide cable. (I remember doing this because it fit better in the computer box. It is a silverstone box and the hard drive and cd/dvd player are not above each other but are side by side, so it is not possible to put them in a master slave arrangement on the same cable.) I suppose I could put them both on the master setting.

But the cable config should matter, should it???

Hi,

Sorry, forgot about the tv part but at least you got enough of a hint to follow through.

I am not sure if the cd needs to be a second master, how ever hda1must be primary master, jumpers are good as not to depend on cable select. Once that is set up auto install / upgrade should be good to go.

Running the "tv testcd" should go through a check each file and then end up at the install menu. You can simply hit reset to exit.

If your jumpers were & cables were non normal, you may need to check the fstab to see if things are put in the correct locations. A df -h will show what is mounted and a few other details.

Hi,

Just wanted to chime in. I had many lock up issues with RD51, as well as corrupt video after a reboot.

After trying numerous suggestions, I decided to re-install using R5C7. My system has been much more stable. I still get the occasional lockup, but they are far and few between.

If you don't have a library built yet (no back up and restore), it wouldn't hurt to give R5C7 a try.

I checked the bios/cmos screens and it has

IDE channel 0 master [maxtor6l200r0]
IDE channel 0 slave [none]
IDE channel 1 master [matshitaDVD-RAM SW-9]
IDE channel 1 slave [none]

the pin selections on the back of the hard drive and dvd are both set at master (as opposed to cable select or slave)

motherboard is gigabyte GA-M55plus-S3G

Thanks, Java. I am fine with a reinstall. I don't have anything I really need. Re-config shouldn't take too long. It is just if it is something stupid, I'd just like to find it. what do you think, MJL, should I just try a fresh install of r5c7??

Hi,
It would not hurt and actually would be a good thing as for diagnostics also. If it is solid on C7 then you can suspect the hardware is all good.

Once you have a complete setup, do a backup and write down the hostname (very important) then if you want to re-try D1 a restore should bring up your settings and all be good. (don't re-back up unless it is a keeper)

It is good practice to do a few installs / upgrades too :) both store recordings as mpg so if you make a few in C7 they should be good in D1.

Have fun!
Mike

Well the R5C7 install went pretty smoothly. It always takes me a little while to get WEP working with the wireless card on reboot.

Anyway, I have yet to get it to lockup like I could on R5D1. In fact, no lockups period.

So sweet. Thanks for the help.
