Post subject:  SOLVED: R5E50 Frontend Help Needed

OK, I installed R5E50 on my main backend/frontend box.

Then I installed R5E50 on my frontend-only box.

I used the instructions from the knoppmythwiki:
http://knoppmythwiki.org/index.php?page=FrontendOnlyInstall

But I still get the error from my frontend-only box that it can't connect to the database. Aargh!

Here's exactly what I've done.

On the backend/frontend machine:

Stopped the mythtv-backend .
Ran mythtv-setup, in General, changed the IP addresses from 127.0.0.1 to the true external IP address of eth0.

Edited /etc/mysql/my.cnf .
Commented out "bind address" line .
Restarted mysql .
Restarted mythtv-backend .

On the frontend-only machine:

Stopped the mythtv-backend .
Stopped mysql .

Edited /etc/mythtv/mysql.txt
Changed the first line entry from 'localhost' to the external IP address of the backend's eth0.
Set 'localhostname' to 'mythfe1' (hostname of frontend-only box).

Rebooted frontend.

All I get is the "Myth cannot connect to the database" error, as it forces me to the mythtv-setup General menu.

Where am I going wrong? The backend was installed from scratch just this past weekend.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

See this link.

http://mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-6.html

You'll need to setup MySQL security. Follow the link above and at the bottom of the page you will see three examples of how to set security.

Dak48,

That's EXACTLY what it was!!!

Should that be part of the KnoppMythWiki entry on setting up Frontends?

Thank you SO much for you expertise and assistance!!!!!!!

I owe you one. Heck, my hair owes you one! :)

I had to laugh, when I saw the hair comment. I am a long-hair and I was pulling my hair out on this one, when I saw something on the MythDora forum referring to that portion of the MythTV install docs.

So like you, I breathed a great sigh of relief when it all came together and was able to find the backend database.

Thanks again. I'm pretty sure I would have resembled Lex Luthor within a week if it hadn't been for your help.

Now to see if I can figure out how to get CC /vbi working for the frontend...
