I fiddled with xorg.conf trying to get my hdtv display working and now there is no display at all when mythtv starts. Can I interrupt the boot process at a point where I can edit xorg.conf or must I reinstall?

Needless-to-say, I am a newbie. Thanks

You don't need to do that, you can either access remotely or use one of the Virtual Terminals.
If you have another PC you can ssh in or change to a console using Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F6
If you are using a Windows based PC, you need to install PuTTY on it, if you do not already have it.

Thanks for your reply, Bruce

SSH is unfamiliar territory to me, so I tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F6. I was unable to type anything in any of the new windows. What am I doing wrong?

I ultimately reinstalled mythtv and changed the permissions on xorg.conf to allow read and write. Now, I can edit xorg.conf using the Knoppix cd, but can't save the changes, despite the properties showing read/write permission. Perhaps I need to log on to mythtv as a root user, but, sadly, I don't know how to do that in Knoppix.

I will appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks.

John

Boy, do I feel stupid.

It turns out that by logging on as root through the Knoppix cd, I can edit the mythtv files. In my ignorance of linux, I assumed that I must somehow get to a mythtv root prompt to log in and edit mythtv files.

I guess that old statement about ass-u-ming is true.

Thanks again for the help.
