Hi all,

I've been lurking for about a week now, getting the info I needed to install Knoppmyth on my Athlon XP machine. It's gone quite well so far, considering my newb status when it comes to Linux.

One question that has me partially stumped though, is this. I currently have another PC on my network, which has acted for years as my file server. It runs XP Pro.

My music and video collections are on this file server, but I'd like to have my Mythbox be able to access it. From what I've read, I should be able to accomplish this by setting up the Samba client on my Mythbox, and then on startup have it connect to the share and then mount it in /myth/music.

Before I attempt this though, I thought I'd ask and see if anyone else has accomplished something like this. I've quickly learned that with linux, there's seemingly infinite possibilites when it comes to accomplishing a given task. And because of that, there's "good" and "bad" ways to accomplish things.

Thanks,
Don

Yep, My preference is samba client and autofs . The create softlinks to mounted shares in /myth/video and /myth/music. Everything is already installed on R5E50 just a matter of a few commands.

Here is a howto.

See my TIER 2 post for example

You seem to be sorted as to the technical howto now, but just as confirmation this works, I use my entire audio (60+gb) and Video (not recordings) from an NFS (Linux to Linux box here, although I have Samba working for a Windows laptop).

Works pretty flawlessly.

Cheers

spal,

I checked out your Tier 2 post, and I was wondering, where do you put the script that you have in the quoted text for the samba/autofs stuff?
