While watching tv (from myth) the video doesnt play smooth like regular tv.
There are minor pauses in video and audio. It seems that frames are being skipped possibly.

mplayer video/audio is great. Myth video video quality is poor and pauses frequently.

Also i checked "top" and cpu is 98%idle.

Thanks

You haven't provided any information that would help diagnose the problem. Let's start with:

Version of KnoppMyth
Hardware specs (motherboard, CPU, RAM, audio, video card)
TV tuner(s) you are using
SDTV or HDTV

...and see where that leads us

Oops sorry

R5E50
shuttle motherboard with onboard audio (celeron)
.5 gig ram/20 gig hard drive

pvr 150

satellite box - dish network

again - mplayer by itself works great so i am sure there is some setting in mythtv that needs to be tweaked.

Thanks

OK, close enough.

As luck would have it myth19kirt just mentioned 2 posts you should look through here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14573 , specifically looking for references to your PVR-150.

That helped, Thanks. I turned off vbi and now the video colors and quality is much much better.

Still one minor issue. Movement (motion) on video is not smooth. I can see trace of movement from one point to another. the audio is fine though.
let me try and search the forum.

Sorry basic question and i didnt find any post for this.

For changing resolution ( i see some people call it capture resolution).
for live tv, I set the resolution in
recording profiles/mpeg2 encoders/live tv.

is this right?

I also see default, high and low quality. When are those encoders used?

Have you checked DMA on the drives?

Do "hdparm /dev/<whatever>"
to see if dma is turned on.

Do an "hdparm -t /dev/<whatever>"
to check the speed.

Use "hdparm -d1 /dev/<whatever>" to turn on.

I get 20mb/s or better on run of the mill seagate drives,
and can have two encoders writing and be playing another
program (i.e. 2 write streams, 1 read).

Cheers.
Paul

mark39,

- I suspect that the cure for the smoothness issue (say in sports or during rapid panning) you're talking about is some kind of deinterlacing. I generally recommend bob2x but YMMV. I forget where it is in the TV settings, try general and playback.

- The other encoder settings are used for recordings. Default is as you might expect the default for scheduled recordings. High and low resolution (along with the live & default profiles too) are simply selectable options when you set up or modify a recording schedule. They all start out with the same default values 480x480, ...
