I ran mythfilldatabase and rebooted several times: I am unable to see the tv guide data. I think the data was downloaded, however, I am not sure how to verify it made it to the database.

Run mythfilldatabase in an xterm and see what errors spit out? Did you configure a lineup at labs.zap2it.com?

I remember a couple old threads on debugging a problem people had with a grabber that made bad assumptions about it's environment... Try searching for "mythfilldatabase" and "mysql" as I remember DB queries being used.

I did configure a channel lineup using labs.zap2it.com. I also mapped each tuner to the channel lineup in the 'Input Connections' menu. In addition a scan for channels was performed. The system's TV functionality works, however, the critical tv guide data is not there.

I believe the hardware is good because I was able to setup Knoppmyth with a bigger HDD. I am re-creating the system with a smaller HDD to perform tests and avoid monkeying up my good large HDD.

I would encourage readers to pose similar questions that dissect how setup and mythfilldabase procedure was performed.

As root try running mythfilldatabase --refresh-today. when it is finished check for guide data. If nothing there then look at /var/log/mysql.err and /var/log/mysql.log to see if there are any clues.

It appears your guide data is filled, because you keep getting

If the --refresh-today option works for you, try --refresh-all to get all the guide data updated.

Attempts with mythfilldatabase --refresh-today were not successful: tv data guide is unavailable. Is there a way (command) to look inside the database to see if the data made it into the database?

Unfortunately /var/log/mysql.err and /var/log/mysql.log were empty and did not reveal any clues.

I suspect the data is downloaded, however, maybe it is not finding its way into its final destination.

Should I just re-install?

Try in an xterm. This should spit out everything in your program guide.

That seems drastic, especially without knowing what the problem is.

EDIT: You said you were using a small HD, does it have any available space? /EDIT

When I said small HDD, it is actually 40GB: plenty of space for testing. The big HDD is 200GB.

As a newbie, I am not sure what I am looking for when I run the code. Was the output directed to a file? I did not see anything on the xterm display. I am not sure if:

1) the select statement returned nothing or
2) I do not have enough information to interpret the results or
3) I have somehow not pefromed the instructions correctly.

The first statement: mysql mythconverg <<EOF
puts the xterm in a state where all subsequent commands are executed at a different prompt:

root@mythtvhost:~# mysql mythconverg <<EOF
> select * from program;
> quit
> EOF

The xterm does not display any additional data.

I agree that reinstall is drastic. I would prefer to learn what the problem, especially if it is "low hanging fruit". However that being said, I do not want to 'burn' any more space on this board than necessary.

Correct. After entering the last EOF and pressing return you should see the contents of the program table which holds the program guide data. A test to make sure your commands are working:This should display all the data from the settings table. alternatively you could

That doesn't sound good. When you issue the mythfilldatabase command do you see that the guide data is actually being downloaded? You should see a series of "Connecting to DataDirect" and a bunch of download progress indicators.

To get into mysql you can also do this:
mysql -u mythtv -p mythconverg; (type in password)
then
select * from program; (enter)
and see if it shows anything there. It might say empty set, if so then there is nothing in that table.

Excellent postings: The two latest snippets were effective at demonstrating mySQL queries. I captured the output below.

I also tried elgordo123's suggestion and it returned an empty set. That being said, I have come to the conclusion that I can not see the guide data because it was downloaded, but did not make it into the database.

I ran mythfilldatabase again and it seemed to download the guide data: 16:36:45 (76.25 KB/s).... saved [1692181]

Given that information, is there anything else that can be done (from a diagnostic standpoint) to identify the root cause of the problem?

Just re-read this. As you are using an analog tuner (PVR-500), you do not want to scan for channels, it can muck up your database. I would remove the tuners in mythtv-setup and recreate them, as well as the Inputs.
