After booting up the knoppmyth box from a short vacation, I came to the unhappy news that I had a boot error. Since I have it switch to the TV screen, this did not become obvious until I attached a monitor to the machine.

Booting the machine it would only come up with a series of 99 99 99 99 99... doing a little googling.. I found that this was a message code from lilo (the boot loader for knoppmyth)
Quote:
Errors 99 and 9A usually mean the map file (-m or map=) is not readable

going through the knoppmyth wiki and the forum, I started looking for easiest ways to correct this issue...

Here's a good hint to anyone/everyone...
go ahead and create your floppy recovery diskette
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... ryDiskette

OK, so I didn't... bummer!

So, on to Plan B.. you can use the install CD as a "recovery disk". This is described ..
Very briefly in:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... tionFromCD
and briefly in:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15755

This does get a little dicey, since you have to create the mount points and mount your primary system disk.. then "chroot" into it.
This link pretty well describes it..
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=12031
There's also this link:
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6449

I think that I was using more of the second link.. to make the story short .. I did different versions of the lilo command.. (including lilo -r ) .. rebooted .. and it failed. I don't understand why.. things are a bit confused! (someone could reduce the confusion by adding a reply! a "how to" on recreating the mbr from this point would be great!)

Back to Plan A

OK, so I totally blew it what I didn't create the rescue diskette .. but wait ..

Recently, I purchased a spare 500 GB IDE (PSATA) drive, as a backup drive.. and used the live cd - gparted disk to create an exact copy of my system. Simple.. since the disk geometry is identical .. boot up on the backup (that's a whole other story http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14937 ) .. and create a rescue diskette. This worked perfectly from the wiki description (link above) Then, I swapped out disk drives and booted from the rescue diskette .. knoppmyth is alive! .. and followed the rest of the recovery plan.

whoops, correction on the wiki is needed .. in step 4.. it says "lilo v". and
http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6074 shows "lilo ?v" .... these both should be
Code:
lilo -v

Note: the wiki has been corrected, and I posted a note on the forum reference.

This did toss me a bit.. I was under the inpression that this would only display the version of lilo .. but it will also update the mbr (master boot record).

OK, then (5) reboot.. and I'm recovered!

hmmm.. on the wiki page:
http://www.knoppmythwiki.org/index.php? ... ryDiskette
for R5F1 or R5F27 - on Creating the Recovery diskette:
Code:
$ fdformat /dev/fd0u1440

becomes
Code:
$ fdformat /dev/fd0u

and you have to install grub-install
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install grub

before the grub-install command will work.
