I have had a problem for a while now. The problem is that when I download the linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13, I run the command tar xjvf linux-source-2.6.......etc. it comes up with an error and tells me to try to use bzip2recover to try to recover undamaged section. So I can't compile the source. But, I transferred the same file to my other machine and it works. I have also change my harddrive and formatted and did an autoinstall R5F1 and I get the same problem. I have been working around by a disk that I had made a while ago following the wiki for Mondo Restore. I know that it is something to do with my pc hardware but, I am lost. Please help. Should I attempt to upgrade the kernel and try that or what?

I find these types of anomalies are typically due to problems with the system memory. You should run memtest (it's on the KM CD, enter "memtest" at the boot prompt) for a few hours to see if any problem is identified.

What happens if you try to bunzip the file instead of tar xjvf... ?

I used bunzip2 and it seemed to work but, as soon as I typed make this is what happened.

(in case you are wondering about the user name I tried to change my email add in my profile and I typed .ca instead of .com and now I can't verify my email so I had to sign up as new user.)

OK, that's completely different than what you described in your first post and does not indicate a hardware issue at all. See tjc's post here http://mysettopbox.tv/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 3404#78802 (There are other posts referencing the asm/socket.h issue as well)

I would still run memtest, the tar xjvf should have worked for you...

Your awesome thank you. I just copied and pasted TJC code in the thread and it all seemed to work
/quote]
Quote:
cd /usr/src
wget ftp://knoppmyth.net/R5/linux-source-2.6 ... om_all.deb
dpkg -i linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13_2.6.18-chw-13-10.00.Custom_all.deb
rm -f linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13_2.6.18-chw-13-10.00.Custom_all.deb
tar xjvf linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13.tar.bz2
rm -f linux
ln -s linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13 linux
ln -s linux-source-2.6.18-chw-13 kernel-source-2.6.18-chw-13 # Thanks jbm2131

and I also had to fix the asm directory also in the same thread
Quote:
root@black2:~# cd /usr/src/linux/include/
root@black2:/usr/src/linux/include# ln -s asm-i386 asm
root@black2:/usr/src/linux/include# ls -al /usr/src/linux/include/asm
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 8 Jan 25 01:41 /usr/src/linux/include/asm -> asm-i386 [
