Post subject:  Getting 5.1 audio from PC to receiver

My PC has a riviera sound card with optical spdif out, going into an onkyo tx-sr304 receiver. I've read up on passing mplayer the hwac3 and hwdts flags, and they are working great, and any other audio codecs are being sent as 2 channel to be turned into 'fake' 5.1 by an algorithm on the receiver. That's fine for me if the file only had 2-channel audio to begin with, but I have files with the full 5.1 audio tracks, but some of the files I am trying to play have AAC 6-channel audio.

How do I get all 6 channels to my receiver? They are all mkv files, is there a way I can extract the audio, re-encode it to ac3 or dts, and repackage the file?
