According to what I have read I should be able to change default player by entering the appropriate code into the "Utilities/Setup" -> "SetUp" -> "Media Settings" -> "Video Settings" -> "Player Settings". I have tried both Mplayer and VLC with no success. The codes I used for both were
Code:
mplayer -fs -zoom -quiet -vo xv %s

vlc file://%s vlc quiet:quit

I also ensured that the both avi and mpg file types are selected to use the default player in "Utilities/Setup" -> "SetUp" -> "Media Settings" -> "Video Settings" -> "File Types"
For both players the avi files will play through whichever player I have selected as default but the mpg files still play through the Internal player, which can freeze on me.

Am I missing a step here?

You need to change the file associations under: "Utilities/Setup" -> "SetUp" -> "Media Settings" -> "Video Settings" -> "File Types"

I had already changed the file association to "Use Default" for avi and mpg file types. The avi types work but the mpg types do not. See above.

I should point out that the mpg files I am trying to play are TV recordings by selecting a file through "Media Library" ->"Recordings". I am trying to play TV recordings and Live TV through one of the players other than Internal.

Ah, ask the wrong question get the wrong answer. It _always_ uses the internal player for TV recordings. If it didn't most of the TV configuration stuff wouldn't work.

The Video Settings only apply to things which are played back from the Videos menu/directory. There are various ways to make the Videos module see TV recordings if you know what you're doing, but none of them really address live TV.

Ahh. That will explain it then. So I need to find other ways around my freeze problems.

If you create a symbolic link in "/myth/videos" that points at the directory that contains your recordings (/myth/tv or /myth/pretty), you can than watch them through the video library and use whatever player you want.

Thanks for that. The sym link works well and gives me a directory named Pretty where I can find the recordings. I will watch a few recordings this way to see if I still get the freezing issue.
