I have just installed R6 (after giving up on Mythbuntu) and am stumped over some basic things.

I don't know how to shutdown

"sudo shutdown -h now" doesn't work. I cant see any gui method of shutting down.

I would also love to drop fluxbox and install xfce or gnome, but I am not sure if I need to remove fluxbox first, and if so would that cause any dependency problems?

Pushin "M" on the Myth screens gives a series of options, which includes shutdown.

As for the other stuff, someone who is far smarter than I will be here shortly... :)

If I were you, I'd not go with shutting down Myth manually, rather I'd think about setting up MythWelcome, then all you need to do is exit the frontend and your Mythbox will shut itself down and turn itself back on again to record you next show.

I looked into setting this up recently - as it didn't work out of the box with the latest R release.

Thanks for the replies. I wouldn't have guessed the command was M, but it definitely works :)

It's still too early for me to start recording, but I will look into the suggested alt way of closing down.

I use mythwelcome to startup/shutdown, and it works great in R6. I did a custom script (pilfered from someone better skilled than I), but there are links to flyspray tickets for the proper KM supported mythwelcome shutdown scripts.

Search the forums for R6 and mythwelcome and flyspray, you should find the thread i'm on about..

Cheers,

Nathan

You should be able to halt the R6 box by doing either:

1) sudo halt
2) sudo shutdown -h -t now

As to ditching fluxbox, I don't think you can without dep problems.

Thanks for that. Can I just add Gnome and if so can you say how I make it the default environment?

I dunno about that... since R6 is based on Arch linux, it uses its own repos. That said you can comment the linhes repos out and add the arch repos, install gnome or whatever then add the linhes repos back, but doing so may mess up your system...

Asking the obvious question... why do you want to drop fluxbox? Are you trying to get Mythback to being a fully functioning distro? Personally I wouldn't do this, unless you're limited to just one computer. Linhes and previous Knoppmyths are designed to be appliances and not a 'PC'. As Graysky says, you'll most likely break something irrevocable if you start changing the environment.
