I have a fairly new install of R5.5 that has been randomly rebooting. So far it has happened while watching HD, watching SD and while doing nothing at all. My system is:

Gigabyte X48-DS5 MB with Intel Quad Core 2.66MHZ
4GB RAM (edit: GB, not MB!!!)
NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX
PVR 250
PVR 150
HDHomerun (on network)
WD 1TB SATA HD
Seagate 250GB PATA HD
Samsung 500GB PATA HD

The logs don't give me any clues as to what happened, but in case they help someone else here are some snippets from tonight's reboot which occurred at 20:11 while I was watching an SD program.

It seems that the problem might be related to commercial flagging while recording instead of after. The system seems like it should be powerful enough to handle that but I will turn off that option and see if it improves.

Also, searching the net I found someone else who recommended adding noapic, noapci, nolapic or some combination of the 3 to my boot options but I don't really understand them well enough to know if those will do more harm than good.

Any ideas?

It might be a hardware issue...

I would do 3 things:
- pick a night when it is not being used and run memtest overnight without changing anything else
- blow all the dust out of it, especially CPU and power supply
- make sure that it is not inside an enclosed area like a cabinet or a closet, at least for a test
- open the case, point a small table (people) fan at it and see if the problem goes away

Sometimes there is a max temperature setting in the BIOS. It reboots if it hits that temperature.

I'll give it a shot, but the system is only 2 weeks old so I don't think dust buildup is an issue. Also the MB runs at about 38C and the hard drives 20-30C because each drive has its own cooler. Those are idle temps, so I guess I need to check it when HD commercials are being flagged.

Sure sounds like a hardware issue to me... do you have a spare HDD? Installation of another O/S and subsequent torture testing (prime95 for example) would be prudent. I would also run memtest86+ for a good 24 h to verify that it's not a bad stick. If you find out that it reboot under another O/S and stress testing, you might consider tweaking some vcores in the BIOS assuming it allows this.

Definitely double check the hardware.

Old timers here are probably sick of this story, but ages back with my original KM box one of my hardware upgrades produced a tiny little splinter of aluminum from the washer-less lock screws biting into the case, and it got into one of the DIMM slots resulting in a nasty intermittent glitch when the system warmed up.

The fact that it's new or recently upgraded hardware makes me think this type of thing more likely rather than less.

broken record response: run memtest. it on Ubuntu Live CD and just about every linux distro now. with less RAM it will weed out pretty quickly if you have a bad DIMM.

I had the same problem quite some time ago, when this version 1st came out. My system runs fine with r5f27. I never did find what was wrong. I went back to r5f27.

Here's an update since I haven't said anything in the last 3 months:

I ran memtest for 3 days and it passed with no problems reported. Since then the computer reboots every 1-3 days, always associated with recording or playing back HD content, often when both are happening at the same time.

My 2-yo son's recent femur fracture and body cast canceled my camping trip this weekend, so I've decided to use the time to troubleshoot further. Before messing with the hardware I decided to try some more software fixes. I'm downloading R6 1.0 right now to see if I can get that to install (in a previous post I described how I couldn't do that with a previous RC). I also changed the playback from the installed default CPU++ to High Quality to see if that makes a difference. I'm letting the TV run on HD playback while other HD programs are being recorded, and so far no reboot. That doesn't mean much though as sometimes an HD program will playback fine while others it reboots 3 times during the show.

What does you X config look like? Which driver are you using, and have you configured the appropriate acceleration?

I've discussed the optimizations in some detail in the R5.5 Hint's and in my Tier 1 post about a Samsung HD TV. Be sure to follow the links to other threads.

I'm using driver version 185.18.14. I configured it by running nvidia-settings and letting it auto-detect the Samsung TV. I don't think I made any changes beyond that as I hadn't read your Samsung post. Right now the appropriate section of xorg.conf is:

Code:
Section "Monitor"

    # HorizSync source: edid, VertRefresh source: edid
    Identifier     "Monitor0"
    VendorName     "Unknown"
    ModelName      "SAMSUNG"
    HorizSync       26.0 - 68.0
    VertRefresh     23.0 - 61.0
    Option         "DPMS"
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Videocard0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName      "GeForce 9800 FX+"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier     "Screen0"
    Device         "Videocard0"
    Monitor        "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth    24
    Option         "metamodes" "DFP: nvidia-auto-select +0+0"
    SubSection     "Display"
        Depth       24
        Modes      "1600x1200" "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Despite it not being mentioned in the modes, the TV itself reports that it's at 1920x1080@60Hz.

I'm going to read through your tips and the Samsung post to see what else I can try. I realized I've also never run top or anything on a remote box while watching HD to see if there were any clues there such as possible memory leaks or excessive CPU usage.

As always, thanks for your assistance and expertise.

I'm recording and watching HD content at the same time while monitoring top, vmstat, mpstat, hddtemp.

Nothing seems unusual.

The CPU(s) usage is at 16%;
The hddtemps are 31C or below;
120MB of RAM out of 3.3GB usable (4 installed) is free. The swap is barely used (92k out of 2GB available);
vmstat doesn't have nvidia mentioned in it;
mpstat verifies top in that most of the CPUs are free (I ran -P ALL and each idle % is in the 95s)

I haven't made any changes yet--this is just an attempt to see if I can catch something going wrong at the time the system reboots.

Finally, it's probably an unrelated issue, but on the off chance that it applies I'll point out that my slave backend frequently becomes disconnected for some reason (it will work fine but its tuners and hard drives become unavailable to the master). Might be totally unrelated but I'm tossing it out just in case.

Update: I'm recording two HD programs at once, playing back one and commercial flagging an HD program. The CPU(s) usage is sitting at 16% and the swap still isn't being tapped. It seems like the hardware isn't being overtasked.

I'm closing this because I decided to go with a clean install of R6 since it's working for me. Thanks to all who tried to help. I'll come back after a while to report if the behavior continues in R6. If not then I guess it was definitely software.
