Tonight I had a wild hair to redo the house myth style and drew out a setup but I dont know if it would work, any input would be appreciated

One backend server, probably a raid 5 array of 300gb drives and 2 pvr250's.

4 Frontend boxes for each room with a set.. question is what happens when one frontend requests a channel change and another set is watching that card or does it even work that way? I'm kind of confused on the whole client/server setup of myth, I believe that it starts copying the live tv stream (aka buffered mpeg2 file) for playback through mplayer on the frontend, but say I've got three frontends on and all want to connect and change the channel? will one be outta luck and not connect? and if they all can connect and watch live tv, what happens when the wife changes the channel in the living room and I'm in the den while the kiddo changes to nick to see the ugly Spongebob?

thanks

Vash

The first 2 frontends to connect are the lucky ones. The next 2 would be presented with an "All tuners are in use" or some such like that.

yes any frontend/backend anything that wants to watch livetv will use one tuner while it's using that tuner nothing else can. it doesn't share a stream or anything like that. (oh and by the way it doesn't use mplayer for tv or recordings.)

For the setup you want you would probably need at least one more tuner. And remember if you have all two or all three tuners in use for livetv you can't record. however you could be recording two things and have all three frontends watching previously recorded shows, because those don't affect tuners at all.

Or a currently recording show. I hit record sometimes when a show is on in the other room that I'd like to put watch on my desktop.

also note that 0.16 which is due out soon is supposed to be doing something about multiple frontends watching the same stream like you were talking about, however I have not used this so I may be reading the feature list wrong, but at any rate there is some development in this area.
