Post subject:  R5V10 and NXServer/Client

I have been running R5V10 successfully for about a week now and it has been pretty stable.

A couple of days ago I noticed the NX folder while I was poking around and was please to discover that this might be a good way for me to be able to access the backend box from one of my Windows laptops.

So I downloaded the windows NX client and it seemed to connect, but I never got anything to come up but a black screen. I am trying to log on as mythtv with the password of mythtv.

When I ssh to the box, NXserve sees the connection up and I can even "send a message" to the client using the send argument so I am pretty sure the connection is solid. My guess is that I need to do something to the mythtv user to get the display to go out via the NX connection.

Has anyone else done this? If so, what do I need to do to get it to work.

Thanks in advance.

David

I've been using mine this way:
I created a new user (davem). Edit /home/davem/.fluxbox/apps and modify the line
[startup] {KnoppMyth-run}
so that it read
[startup] {xterm}

In the client, choose "Custom Desktop" and in settings choose "Run Console". When you connect it should fire up an xterm, but no window manager. I then type fluxbox or startfluxbox in the xterm to start the window manager. It's pretty nice, thanks for putting it in Cesman. :)

sorry I don't think this has been talked about publicly, but since it's released publicly now let me copy and paste some info from cesman about it. you may want to start at the top and if that doesn't work then work your way down.

To use it:
mkdir /home/.nx/.ssh
nxkeygen
nxserver --start

The user mythtv already exist, passwd is mythtv.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Try the following:

Code:
 rm -fr /home/.nx/.ssh/authorized_keys2
 nxsetup --setup-nomachine-key

Feedback please.

----------------------------------------------------------

Use a custom setting in your nxclient. Use the following command.

Code:
startfluxbox

This will actually start another mythfrontend session on your boxen.

That has already been corrected. The scripts take care of it.

Post subject:  Thanks for the responses

The Start fluxbox in the "custom settings" did the trick.

Thanks!

Post subject:  NXServer

Running on R5A12 at the moment, followed XSecrets mini guide as above,
(will detail what I did. login as root, nxkeygen, nxsetup --setup-nomachine-key, nxserver -start, but was already running)

and put in the startfluxbox into the advanced options, but the nxclient just sits there saying setting up the X environment.

Have I missed something ???

This looks like a brilliant addition to the knoppmyth system, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK, CESMAN ET AL !!!!!!

I've always had to lower my bandwith settings as well. I don't know if my wireless connection is just not fast enough or what, but If I leave it on LAN it never finishes intitializing, but if I bump it down to one of the lowest settings it works fine.

Post subject:  BRILLIANT !!!!

Thanks for the tip, but was just about to update. Just managed to get it going !!!!

It works absolutely awesome !!!! Well impressed !!!!

Another pat on the back for the excellent dev team !!!!

Just a couple of things :

While it is probably a drawback of the NXClient/server, rather than the awesome mythtv software, but I cannot get to Watch TV, DVD's, or play a few of the game options. Sound is not being passed, but is playing on the TVBox, even though I have enabled the multimedia option in the NXClient setup.

I just wondered if there was a simple setting (maybe in the XServer settings) to allow tv dvd's etc to be viewed from the NXClient ???

Chuffed to bits (nearly) !!!!

I SERIOUSLY doubt you will ever get full motion video working over nxserver It was really added as an easy option for remote administration. not to be used as a frontend. there is a frontend for that purpose.

Post subject:  Not a problem !!!!

Okay, that is not a problem. I was just just thinking ahead of how to get a very small footprint frontend. I suspect I will have a large project coming up soon, at my sports club. I would like to be able to give them a system where they can schedule or watch recordings, or dvd's, or seperate freeview TV/Sky channels on approx. 5 different screens. And which tuner card would I need for Sky transmissions in the UK ????

Now I have heard about all this frontend and backend business, but am not too sure how it really works. I know I would have to get a large server, as the backend ??? with a few tuners in, to satisfy a maximum number of channels that could be recorded at once, but how would the frontends work for recordings and live tv ??? from the backend via mythstream ??? or just because they are frontends would they automatically get the videos directly over the lan ??? And what about playing music stored on hard disc.....would that be the same ??? I am thinking of an excellent network setup of myth here, for tv recording/live tv/tv playback/watching movies, and a music jukebox over lan type setup. Now how good would that be !!!!

I was just thinking about small clients like VNC/NX, or diskless stations ? And would a cd or dvd on the backend be able to be played on a diskless frontend ???? Samba mount ?????

I have not got much hardware to test all of the options, and TV tuners as you all know are very expensive.....

So thats why I am asking the forum. This isn't a criticism, but there doesn't seem to be too many write ups of all of the functionality in Knoppmyth apart from what you see on the menu, and extra bits that people add-in.

I guess you have not read my LinHES page. VNC/NX isn't meant to to do what you want. Please don't continue this thread if it has nothing to do with the subject.
