This is a link to an excellent and detailed document about how to get a serial IR transmitter working with KnoppMyth.

I used it to get one going with my .14 system under the R4 branch. I haven't tried it against the R5 branch yet, but when I move to R5A15 at home in a few weeks I will be walking through it again. He does mention how to compile against the newer kernels.

actually most of the lirc modules are precompiled in the very latest alpha release.

Hi X. Any chance you could give us more details? I'm going to give this a try when I clean install R5A15 on my living room machine.

It's great to hear they are in there, I don't want to duplicate too much work, but it did take me most of a day last time (as I also had to teach it my obscure euro remote).

What needs to be done to make it go under the new release?

Thanks!

I've never done irblaster stuff, so I'm not sure and you will still have to teach it the remote unless you backup your lircd.conf or whatever file you learned the remote under.

What you can skip is anything that says recompile lirc and choose blah or anything like that all(most some really obscure one wouldn't compile) the modules should be already compiled and you just have to modprobe them and/or add them to /etc/modules. There is also a lirc reconfigure script included that looks much like the lirc setup program but instead of compiling simply loads the appropriate module. I have used this script, but I was simply changing to the lirc_gpio module for my leadtek 2000 remote, and haven't done extensive testing of the script, so if you are trying to keep a remote and setup an irblaster it may walk on your toes a bit, not sure.

There is a parallel thread to this one where a solution for getting the IR transmitter to work in R5 is presented, although I find it a little confusing. But it is probably related to my knowledge (or lack there of ) of linux. I haven't tried it yet but will when I understand it better.

Cheers.

So I guess RF devices work differently then IR as far as MythTV/lirc is concerned? What controls RF devices?

well the one RF remote I know of the ATI remote wonder comes with it's own reciever that plugs in usb and it is controled by a kernel module and has nothing at all to do with lirc.
