I need to clear all the settings that I input when I first booted to MythTV. I had to guess at my channel frequency table, because my local provider -- Charter - Birmingham, AL -- couldn't tell me what to use.

I am a TOTAL linux N00B so PLEASE use EXPLICIT directions on how to clear these settings and re-enter the setup process within Myth.

for example.... If I need to type "mythtv-setup" somewhere, please tell me exactly where to type it, and how to get there from the main MythTV screen.

Thanks in advance.

you can't get there from the main mythtv screen.

you need to exit mythtv.

once you've exited mythtv hit alt+X will open an xterm. type mythtv-setup chose yes and yes then complete the setup again.

Note, <ALT><S> will open start mythtv-setup as well.

Thanks a lot, cesman.

btw, I got the 7nif2 on your recommendation. Seems like a great mobo.

I'm still setting it up, because I can't get it to work through the s-video out yet. Whenever I unplug the vga and try to boot with only s-video plugged in, it says something like "unspecified video mode" or something like that, and asks for the user to specify a number -- 1-6. I've tried them all (1-6) and none work.

Any suggestions?

edit /etc/lilo.conf

change vga=791 (or some similar #)

to vga=normal

run lilo -v

then reboot and see what happens.

Ok, I'm gonna try this over my lunch break. Lemme make sure I've got my info strait:

hit alt+X to open an xterm

in xterm, type "lilo -v" and hit enter <-- this will open up some sort of editor for lilo.conf

I then change vga=791 (or some similar #)

to vga=normal

Does this sound about right?
I DID say I was a total linux n00b!

If you start a terminal in X then you will probably be the mythtv user. to edit lilo you will have to su to root (su at the prompt and then your root password) and then edit lilo.conf

.... I would seriously LOVE to take your advice and use your guidance, but I have no idea wtf a terminal is, what X is (xterm?), who su is, and how to edit lilo.conf assuming I can ever get to it -- will it be like editing a textfile in notepad?

I have no idea whats goin on here, its all pops and buzzes on my end. Is there a n00bz guide to linux somewhere I could read?

well looks like you understoodthe alt+X to open an xterm when something pops up on the screen then you'll know what an xterm is. su is simply a command to become root. inside the xterm type su and hit the enter key then it asks you for password. you created this password on install. then the prompt will change to # then you know you are root.

to edit you can use nano or vi. if you don't know how to use vi then type vimtutor and it will teach you how to do vi. the first few pages should be enough to teach you how to make basic edits like you need here.

Yes, I did understand that alt+x opens up x-term, what was not mentioned was that X stands for x-term. Thats why I asked what x was.

Is root like admin?

well when you see X in reference to linux you really need the context. in this case with alt+X it opens Xterm the X in X term references X windowing system which is the graphical enviornment that linux/unix uses, and is much to complicated to explain in this forum. if you are interested there are literally reams of information on the X windowing system.

nah, I'm only interested to the extent that I will be using it for mythtv (knoppmyth, if it matters which install).

Thanks for the info X, I'll try and edit the lilo.conf file tonight.

any idea what to type at x to get back into mythtv?

mythtv-setup takes you to the settings, but when you hit escape, your back at X, outside myth

mythtv takes you directly to tv, hit escape and your back to x, outside myth

what do you enter to take you to the myth menu?

You can right-click on the desktop and pick MythTV from the appropriate submenu (I think it's under Graphics, and this is assuming you're using the R5 alpha). Or you can open another Xterm window and type "mythfrontend." Or you can reboot your machine.
